    hello folks!
I'm having troubles and is asking for help.

    Can't Open Floppys
I tried several disks, some with texts, some with pictures,
some were brand new, none opened.
These are the messages I got on each one.

"The disk in drive A is not formatted.
Do you want to format it now?
    Yes No "
    I Click "Yes "
    next dialog comes up with "Quick erase Selected ";
    I click "start "

    dialog
"You cannot do A Quick format because the disk is not formatted,
it's capacity does not, match or there is no disk in the drive.
Click OK to perform a full format using the capacity you specified.
    OK CANCEL "
    I click OK

    dialog
"Windows could not format this disk.Either the selected
capacity is not valid for this disk. Or the Disk is damaged and
    may be replaced. OK "
    Windows98SE; IE6
thanks in advance and with much hope that you can help!!

Floppy drive has gone bad. Cheaper to buy a new one than to try and get one repaired.

Biz Rate shows them available from $5 US.

    Hello,

I am having the same problem. I replaced the drive and still get this error. When I select "Yes" to format, the system freezes. I tried removing the drive and controller through DEVICE MANAGER. No help. The only reason I want to fix the drive is because I have Windows ME and want to re-format my hard drive and do a clean install of XP.

Is it possible to create a boot disc on a CD-ROM?

    Thanks

    Hi Hot Tuna!
You seems to know more than I do.
    I was advised to replace my floppy drive;
I don't know where to start, and you have done that.
although it seems it did not help.
Like you I tried to change the driver, that did not
    work either.
Howerever the short answer to your question is "yes "
I have read of this, but I do not know how it is done.

PS. I was unable to thank the the person who sent me the
first note, because there was no reply button,
so I'll say thanks to hm now "Thank you "

No need to create a bootable CD, the WinXP CD is bootable and will format the HDD before installing as long as you make that selection...

FYI, for some reason occasionally floppies created on a W2K or XP machine become unreadable, with the format message presented to you. But reading these disks is sometimes possible by bunging them in a floppy drive on a PC running Win 95 or 98. Don't know why, but have seen it work on more than one occasion.

Can't speak for anyone else, but the above seems to be the rule for my XP. Have 7 year old computer (was w95, now 98SE) with original floppy drive rarely fails reading a floppy. My 2 year old XP, on it's 2nd floppy drive has 50/50 odds of reading the same disk. Which machine formatted the disk does not make a difference.

I used to have problems with floppies not being read (W98se), but after I ran ScanDisc the floppies were readable again.

    Hello James!!
Thank you so much, sorry for not replying earlier.
However I did all sorts of cleaning, including scanning
(thorough which took 2 hours) I also defraged.
I have tried every thing I could think of. I've
tried so many tricks and advice.
    thanks
