Does anyone know how to disable or remove the sign-on window (Welcome to Windows) at start up which requires a User Name and password?

I am using the WIN 98SE system.

I would just like to press the computer ON button and walk away instead of always returning to fill in my password to continue start up.

There are two possible causes for this dilemma, so let's start by checking the first major cause. You should see an icon on your Desktop that says "Network Neighborhood ". Right-click that and choose Properties. On the Configuration tab, you should see a drop-down list that says "Primary Network Login." Make sure this is set to "Windows Login" and then click OK. If you are asked to restart, click "No," as we're going to move on to the other cause.

Open up your Find tool by going to Start | Find | Files and Computers. In the name field, type "*.pwl" (sans quotes) and click "Find Now." This will pull up all the password lists stored on your computer, and as long as the computer can find one of these lists, it will prompt you for a password. Once the Find utility has completed, delete all the PWL files you see listed. Keep in mind that any stored passwords you had may be lost. Once complete, right-click your Recycle Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin Contents. Now, restart your computer. When Windows boots up it will ask you for a username and password. Go ahead and type in a username but leave the password blank and click OK. You have now eliminated your password prompt problem. Restart your computer to test the fix; you should see a computer that boots without a password.

    Broni or anyone else:

Broni did not solve my problem. I had already attempted those solutions.

The initial sign on window, menu, prompt or whatever appears during the STARTUP or Boot phase of WIN98. This is normal. It has the User Name, but not the password.

I want to know if it is possible to completely eliminate this sign on window so that when you start (pushing button) or restart it never appears. I want to be able to start the computer, walk away, and come back to my desktop. Now, I have to click OK on this window or the ENTER key to continue. Presently I do not need a password---I eliminated that task, but still can't get that sign-on window to completely disappear (disable).

For a home computer person, I see no need to have to provide a user name and a password to complete the computer start.

All of the various methods are covered here.

I hope you find your solution in there. Perhaps the multiple user configuration tip applies to you??

Hi, Are you saying you set the BIOS password option and have forgotten
what the password is and thus cannot remove it ?
Or for example, that you have a PC from someone who had
    set the BIOS password ?
If we are indeed discussing a BIOS password, I am not sure this Board
would approve of a reply to your post.
It's tricky to remove such a password ...
    regards
PS If we are discussing a Windows login problem, Broni's post is accurate
    and concisely made.

surferdude2: None of your procedures worked. I still have the Sign on (Logon menu) at start up.

Merlin: No, no. This has nothing to do with the Bios. It is that annoying Logon menu requiring a password and Username that I am referring to at start up or booting up. No one has supplied a procedure for eliminating it, if there is such.

I'd say we have exhausted all the standard remedies with no apparent relief. If TweakUi didn't get it, that's about the end of the line.

I don't run Win98 SE so can't experiment to dig you up a solution.

I have no further thoughts on this. If you manage to solve it, I would appreciate your solution so we can all learn from it.

Here is what I found in my config.sys file:

    1. DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    2. DEVICE=C:\WINCOWS\EMM.386.EXE

Both items have a check mark next to them. Item 1 starts with a Windows flag. That is all that is present.

Go to the Control Panel and open Users

Delete all users listed in there, as long as there is even one user listed you'll always have the login screen.

When you reboot and click OK with a blank password it may ask if you want to create a profile, or something along those lines. Be sure to say no or it will create a user profile and you'll be right back where you started.

IF I DO WHAT YOU SUGGEST, ALL FAVORITES AND PERSONAL FILES WILL BE DELETED. DO I REALLY WANT TO DO THIS?

This Microsoft suggestion worked to some extent. The Signon menu for passwords and user did not appear, BUT My not all my desktop icons were there, such as my browser for Netscape, and other icons.

    So, only half good.

Create new shortcuts and you'll be done.

Just looked at what Steve sent you to, I had forgotten about the choice of all users using the same setup or profile. Like Steve said, recreate the shorcuts and you're set.
