Hello everyone. I have a compaq presario 5080us desktop pc, windows XP professional, Intel celeron processor, 797MHZ; 160mb ram.
when I bought it, it came with windows me, and 128mb ram.
I've had this pc for about a year. When I upgraded, I formatted my harddrive, and did a clean install. I also added another formatted hd with no OS on it; I just use it for storage space. I've had problems off and on with stability issues; but now it's at the point where I wanna smash the whole thing (LOL) Well, over the course of time things just gradually got worse; now I can't access certain services like helpctr.exe, as well as a few other exe files. Whenever I try to do a system restore, the only date that is available (always) is the same date that I'm trying to do the actual restore.
As of recent, my internet service wouldn't work (I have DSL), and whenever I try to repair it (start-connect to-> show all connections) I get a message "repair attempt failed" cause: flushing ARP cache ", I didn't use my pc for about a week, and all of a sudden my internet service worked again, thus eliminating the need for a repair operation. Now, for my latest problem, my pc continually hangs, and it takes about 5-10 minutes for a program to load up, a folder to open, or a right-click gesture. It also takes an extremely long time for boot-up/shut-down, and if I try to close a program, I usually get an end now prompt, followed by a send error report prompt. I've ran just about every antivirus and spyware/adware program I can think of. I've found a few bugs ie;spyware and adware. I have run a few of those "so called" memory booster programs to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I thank you guys for taking the time out to help us out. <PEACE>

You don't have enough memory to run XP properly. I think that's the heart of your problem.

I agree with surferdude2 about your having too little memory. 256Mb minimum, 512Mb much better, 1Gb wonderful. So while there are some other things to check and probably to fix, they will only do so much for you.

    - free space on the OS drive: you absolutely need at least 10% free for NTFS and 20% free for FAT32. More is better but you gotta have that much.

    - with your XP install CD in the drive, click on start => run, key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and OK. It should run pretty quickly and not tell you much unless you check the event log entry it will have made but any damaged or missing system files will be replaced with good copies.

    - click on start => run, key in CMD and OK. Then
    Code:
    chkdsk c: /r
and answer yes to letting it run the check disk at next boot then reboot.

    - move your all of your pagefile except 10Mb from the system drive to your data drive if there is room. See the picture.

    - after the reboot from the pagefile manipulation, defrag.

I put in my xp cd, it self booted, and I exited out. i ran scannow, and I got a prompt for the cd. I keep on hitting retry, and I get the same prompt over and over again.

P.S.- Why do my posts appear across the screen, Instead of line
    by line?

Do you have a regular XP CD or one of the 'recovery' CDs that come with some systems like DELL and others?

Not sure what you mean about the way your posts display. They look fine to me.

I have a regular windows xp cd.
actually, I found a way to get around the cd issue.
I took the I386 folder straight from the disk, put it in my c: directory, and
changed my source directory in regedit.
I ran scannow, restarted my pc, and now, I have an install icon next to my clock. When I hover over it, it says, TSA installer 100% complete.
What is this, and why can't I find it when I do a file and folder search.
I also ran hijack this, and here is a copy of my startup log.
Maybe this will shed some light.

Well, at a guess your TSA icon is either

"To backup a Novell server, one must run a Target Service
    Agent (TSA) "

Or the game that lives in C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa
and is being fired off by
    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa\tsm2.exe
    or
    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa\ts2.exe

With the minimum system you have, there is lots of stuff running at boot time that you don't need and really don't have the resources to run unless needed.

Take a look at Black Viper's web site and the detailed info on startup stuff.
