Latly I notice that my Internet trafic is working without me doing anything on the computer , my computer is always on & I use fast internet conection that is always on , last time I didn't use the computer for about 14 hours , when I looked at the Local area connection I sow 60 MB of trafic in & out , I can't find the reason & I don't realy know what's creating this trafic , maybe there is software that can show me exactly what program is creating this trafic.

    Thank's

    Hello blumash,

You can start by looking at your Firewall log.

AV software for instance look for updates and you may have others that also do that where the software holds a port open in order to listen for communications. In the firewall, if it's a 3rd party brand, look for any programs that are "act as server" enabled and disable the feature, closing ports in the process. Take Steve Gibson's firewall test https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

I don't have a cable connection, if I did, I certainly would get a modem with an on/off switch.

    Regards - Charles

On an "always on" cable connection, there will always be a certain amount of internet traffic, even when you are not using the computer. For example, on my computer, Symantec might update, Atomic Clock might synchronize with the timeserver, Weatherbug is constantly in touch with "home" etc... There are also various (sometimes malicious, sometimes harmless) probes that float around, looking for a comp that will let them in. MS apps are notorious for generating traffic, even when idle (Why does your Windows Explorer need to contact MS everytime you look at your file tree? )

If your system is properly MS updated, set for safety, and running a good internet security program, then you can be online, all the time, just fine. It is not necessary to shut a cable modem off. But unless you are using a router, you are depending on software to protect your system. The only way to be absolutely sure you are safe (paranoia level) is to completely disconnect, either by turning off the computer or the modem, or better yet, unplugging them. I know now that lightning does not care which wires: electric, phone or cable, that it travels through... so an investment in a UPS, preferably with ports for your phone and cable connections is worth it! I leave my computer on and connected, unless the UPS is screaming, or I plan to be gone more than 12 hours. I use Norton. YMMV.

I leave mine up and connected 7x24. The UPS software is set to do an orderly shutdown of the PC if the UPS battery starts to get low on juice though.
