Whilst fooling with burner installation below, I noted that my machine has USB ports and card in the back.

I did not know it had them, Duh! (Have had machine since 98.) Never had use for USB before. Now, I am looking to acquire external burner and maybe use the flash devices.

The thing is, I did not think NT supported USB.

    Anyone have observations?

How can I determine if USB is functional? (If so, can I alter to USB 2.0?)

    Natively NT4.0 doesn't support USB.
There are some 3rd party hacks available to give basic USB support for common hardware like Mice keyboards etc. But nothing too fancy. I did a quick Google for NT4.0 USB support and it's not too promising, and really not worth the bother.

Thanks Paul...am going to backup and switch to XP ...

    anyway.

I also appreciated the URLs in your signature. They put me on to some good cleaner programs to dump index.dat files etc, and appreciate your help on drive install earlier.

Last thought: The USB board was installed a long time ago. You would think something would be outthere to support it, even then.

This CPU is custom made and the gents who did it knew there stuff, and were doing the HUB work for local service bureau and telecom firm, before the firm decided to go internal.

I will check my system files to see if there is something loaded I do not know about.

    Hive,
XP will be a big improvement over NT. Just make sure your hardware meets the requirements for XP. Particularly your Motherboard and any internal cards.
Suggest a minimum of 256MB RAM. Although slightly less (say 192) will be OK but not ideal.

    I will climb Everest

And see what I can do.

I do not know about MB, but I know I have Pentiom 3 (350) and should be able to increase RAM to 512. When the guys built the CPU, they did say they could go up to 1028 RAM, so there should not be a problem there. (This machine has run flawlessly since 1998, save a couple BSODs and a few conflicts that got into Dr Watson column.)

I guess I am convinced that a custom made machine is still way to go, and will probably keep tweaking this old dog until it needs new MB, etc, as the box seems to be universal. Might even see if I can replace MB or P3 later on...

FYI, aside from switching to XP and boosting RAM, I want to replace ZIP100 with a second HD that might be bootable or set to continually back up (Raid?), unless I learn better solutions here.

Gee, except for learning curve and time away from my other pursuits, this stuff could be fun.

Thanks for you help and have a fun holiday!
