That's likely related to some Spyware that you have contracted recently.

You will need to run AdAware to see if it can detect and clean it.

    AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

    easier link for AdAware= http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

You should also do a virus scan using one of the on-line free programs such as:

HOUSECALL Free on-line Virus Scan http://housecall.antivirus.com/

If after doing those two things you still have the problem, you'll need to run HiJackThis and post a log here for someone to interpret.

Do the easy two and post back your results and we can go from there.

    internet explorer still shutting down

Thanks for the suggestions, Surferdude2. I've tried running adaware several times and it keeps freezing on me before I am able to complete it. AFter doing the search, it tells me how many ____ and then after I x each box and click on next, I get a pop up box that says "17 objects will be removed. Continue?" And then it won't do anything else. When I click on next, it refuses to do anything. Any ideas what to do about that? I'm about pulling my hair out. Try to fix one problem and have a problem with the fix. Augh!!

Once again my apologies for my ignorance. Can you tell me how to put it into safe mode?

Thanks CXFusion. I guess I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling it. At this point, I'm just reluctant to do anything because it seems as though all I do is make the problem worse. Now it is so slow (called dragging??) that when I type a word in, it registers 12 hours later.

I was successful in running Spybot...still have the internet explorer shutting down problem. Can't figure out how to run Adaware.

Can someone tell me if there is another free "adaware" out there that I can download.

Also, is there something I can buy that has an anti-virus fix, spyware (Spybot equivalent)and adware (Adaware equivalent) removal?

Also, you might think I'm a loon but I have to ask this one. I had gotten so sick of the CashBack or Something Buddy (dog thing) being attached to my computer without my ok that I wrote them a really, really nasty email. Is it possible that they could pinpoint my computer specifically to make it have even more problems?

    Thanks.

If I uninstall internet explorer, how do I reinstall it? Do I have to have a CD? I am assuming I can't download it from the internet because my internet won't work if I uninstall it?

Dang, I wish I knew my way around computers.

Is internet explorer and the operating system the same thing? I have a CD for Windows XP. Is that what I want to install after I uninstall internet explorer?

dl the install file and install over it, prob not the best idea but from experience, when you uninstall it it can cause problems because a basic of windows is explorer.exe and that is somehow linked to ie.

Before XP, Internet Explorer was simply an application that ran just like Word or a spreadsheet.

Starting with Windows 2000, Internet Explorer was made into sort of a part of the operating system and with XP, it is so integrated you can't remove it. In Add/Remove there is an option that looks like one to remove IE but all it really does is remove your ability to run it. IE is still very much there.

There is a lot to the operating system that has nothing to do with IE and IE certainly is not your entire operating system but XP users can't get rid of it. CxFusion3mp is probably familiar with and using an older OS that would allow removal.

As to your question about putting the PC into safe mode, probably the easiest thing to try first is start => run => msconfig and choose the option for Diagnostic Startup and then reboot. Most non-essential things will not be started.

    Or start => run => msconfig > Boot.ini tab > Safe Mode :)

Teree, go ahead and give AdAware a shot while in Safe Mode. It just might complete without hanging.

If no Joy in Safe Mode, then run HiJackThis and post a log here for the experts to check.

    Full instructions and download here.

OK. I ran AdAware, SpyBot and www.housecall.antivirus.com and I think I was successful, finally, with all three. I am still having the same problem. What should I do next short of throwing the computer out the window??

Since you're apparently now virus and spyware free, you can assume the problem is corruption in the IE6 files.

The solution is outlined very well here.

Do the steps in the order given and you will likely be able to clean it up. You'll notice that the bottom line, after all repair attempts are tried, is to do a repair install of the XP system, maybe even a full install. I hope that isn't needed but be prepared anyway.

I went as far as checking the Windows XP files as it suggests in the link you posted (not sure it was successful because it never told me if there were or weren't corrupted files) but am afraid to continue further for fear of making it worse.

In the error message I get:
    APPName: iexplore.exe
    ModVer: 6.02800.1106
    AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106
    Offset: 0000e06d
    ModName: browseui.dll

it also says "the following files will be included in the error report
    C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER3.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Does this give me any indication as to what the problem is and how I might fix it?

    Fixed Problem

I managed to fix the problem. I downloaded upgrades for Windows XP and it eliminated the internet explorer closing itself down problem. BUT I am still having a problem. I don't know the computer word for it but when I type a word, the letter doesn't appear when its typed. There is a delay. What is it called and how can I fix it?
