ok some info before i post my problem.

i run windows xp professional (danish version) and connect to the internet via a local area network.

    problem:

several computers are connected to this workgroup called OEK.
and i would like to share a folder with only some of these people in this workgroup with restrictions on who can access me and not.

i have tried several ways, even remote assistance with the msn messenger getting help by people who has done this successfully, but there seems to be something missing in my windows. the security properties will not show when i: rightclick the folder i want to share -> choose sharing & security from the list. i only get the properties for sharing (security wont show up)

i will put a screen capture on the following adress soon:
    www.oek.dk/~sagmyr/security/index.html

hope someone can help me with this.

Yeah - I too have that problem with XP Home Edition -- In Windows98SE, when you right-click on a folder to share it, you can select wether or not to have that shared folder password protected. Why did MS think this would be a good option to LEAVE OUT?

Who knows -- I just asked a similar question in the "Networking" forum.

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View > uncheck "Use simple file sharing "

    Nope

I do not have that option under WinXP Home Edition. Is there another route to take?

Which reminds me of another quirk I don't really like in XP: If I want to get to the "Advanced Networking & User Options" in XP Home, I have to restart the computer in SAFE MODE.. That way I can get to all the advanced features (I found this out in WinXP Inside Out) -- I actually tried it, and it works, but what a strange way to access "features ".. In Safe Mode... Odd isn't it?

Don't have any experience with Home. Try booting into Safe Mode and login as Administrator. That's my last best guess.

For XP Home, download scm, extract to a temporary directory, right-click setup.inf and select Install, say no to overwrite esent.dll if prompted.

Thanks ;-) I'll give scm a try... I did reboot in Safe Mode, and I do have a LOT more options for security -- but still no simple "Password Protect this folder" option... SO -- It's off to the MS site to try scm :) I'll let everyone know what happens!!

God, I love this forum! Hehehehe

There is no simple "Password Protect this folder" option. Go to the folder Properties > Sharing tab > mark Share this folder > go to Permissions

    Kevin,
Thank you for your replies, they are appreciated. However, the "permissions" button does not exist in XP Home. Believe me, had it been there, I would have tried it ;-)

I think I may upgrade to XP Pro LOL it seems to have all the options and extras that I need/want :)

    Thanks again Kevin :)

If you're speaking to me, then yes I'm using NTFS file system. If you're speaking to svendelux, then "oops, sorry :) "

You only get file level security wth NTFS. Convert may be an option if you do not dual boot with Win9x.
