    Best Restore Solution

Edit Note to all: the user needs to use Ghost or similar imaging software and is having trouble figuring out exactly how. I had the same problem so couldn't help but thought I'd move the thread from 2K to some place where it might get attention from someone who knows and can say how. Newt

I'm trying to figure out the best way to Restore a W2k Full B'up to a blank FAT32 partition. My PC has over 20 partitions with 2 Primary, both of which boot to Win2k. I ran the normal b'up to backup all the files on 1 of the Primaries, as well as the System File b'up. My objective is to have a backup of an almost complete install available at all times in case I have a VERY unexpected crash like the 2 I had this past week. All of my work data is on the other Logic drives so there's no worry there.
My question is exactly how/when do I restore? Do I have to install the OS on the blank drive, THEN restore? Or do I format the partition I want to restore, then boot to the other Primary, and restore from there? Also, do I need to restore the System files first, then the other FULL backup? Any other suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks,
    G.P. Lea

Might make more sense for this situation to burn an image rather than try to use a backup. Ghost or similar.

    Can you elaborate?

I've got a 3 yr. old version of Norton's Ghost, but I've never used it. For instance, can you address the issues, if any, or process to achieve what I need to do?

    Thanks,
    GPLea

    Ghost Escapes Me

I'd rather not have to learn another technology when Win2k should work fine IF somebody answers the above questions. I'm NOT stupid, but I don't like Norton, and Ghost doesn't seem to work, so I don't want to buy an upgrade.

    HELP,

A restore of a standard backup will not put a working OS on a blank drive.

An image backup will as long as it is the original drive or another that is identical.

So the short answer to your original question is - what you want to do cannot be done in the way you want to do it. That is the reason we suggested options.

No one implied that you were stupid as far as I can tell.

Your thread title asks for "Best Restore Solution" and that is what we offered.

    Thanks.

Thanks Newt. I wasn't trying to be beligerent, or whatever, more trying to be humble in my "stupid" remark. I've just never worked with "ghosting" or old fashioned restoration; so the only thing I knew was that once I was committed that was it.
I loaded about a 3 yr. old ver. of Norton that I'd never used, but it wasn't very intuitive, to me at least. I'm gonna search cnet and zdnet to see if I can find a freebie. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I'm not good with it myself but some on here are.

I'm moving this to the Other Software section and changing the title so you will hopefully get details from a Ghost user who never looks in the 2K section.

True Image is good as is Ghost, and the aforementioned Radified site by Paul is a great place to learn even more than you wanted to know about Ghost. If it can't answer you questions then you have trouble.

best5 - I was reading your links with interest but find that some of the links in your Geocities tutorial are dead, for me, at least. Specifically; I think all are dead in your second link. The one on the first link seems ok.

    Hello,

    I know about this bug - cause it's a bug :(
If you use Mozilla Firefox or the obsolete Netscape 4x, everything works fine; with IE you suppose to do this: go to the http://www.geocities.com/best5ro/ghost/Ghost_2.html , copy this url , go to your home page/elsewhere, paste http://www.geocities.com/best5ro/ghost/Ghost_2.html and press enter....and you'll see my 2nd page. The same for any other page which "is not found" by Yahoo.

    regards,

    Stefan

PS: I shall try to repair this annoying problem theese days

    Ghost issue

I have been able to transfer a full Ghost (ver 2002 and later) bootable partition to a new HD and have it boot in the same machine the original HD came from. The system simply recognized the new HD in a passing dialog box the first boot, but all was cool after.

I do know that Ghost 2001 does not handle a Win2k transfer in this method.

    Good Luck

    gplea,
I think your biggest problem in trying to accomplish this is using 3 year old software. Three years ago drive imaging software was in its infancy and not really reliable. Ghost 9 is the current version and I hear it works very well (Symantec bought PowerQuest and Ghost 9 is basically PowerQuest's DriveImage which was an excellent program). I use Acronis TruImage and the program works very well. These two programs are fairly similar in their features. What you would want to do is make an *image* of the partition that your OS is installed on and store it on another drive (at least a different partition). These programs will make an *exact* copy of the data and your data will be restored to the exact same condition it was at the time the image was made (did I say *exact*?) :D
I'm not familiar enough with Ghost to know all the features offered... but Acronis TruImage will let you schedule when you would like the images made and run automatically if so desired, it will also perform incremental backups and only update changes since the last image. You can even restore individual files without having to restore the whole image. Check HERE for more info (you can also download a trial version). HTH

    B

    Thanks Mr. B.

That does explain a lot. I don't have ANY $$$ to spare right now because I'm out of work, which is why I was looking for any freebies. The other thing that makes me nervous is that when I installed OSLoader (a really good freebie) that's a good subst. for Boot Magic (which I never liked) it sees that partition, but when I try to load it, it say it can find NTLOADER. It's not that I don't have all the original (AND LEGAL) apps, it's just SUCH a pain to reload it because I'm using that partition exclusively for digital audio editing, and there's a boatload of customization to do on the OS.

    Tanx Again,
    GPLEA
