Hi all, this is my first posting and I am hoping that one of you smart folks can help me out. There is a static noise coming from my speakers when ever I take th mute off. It is very loud and it sounds like someone trying to find a station on an old radio and all they get is static as they go up the dial. I disconencted my dsl connection, thinking that it might be feedback from the phone like or something. That didn;t help. I tried messing around with the sound settings, that didn;t do any good.

It used to only happen once in a while when I was listening to a music clip or video clip online, now it happens all the time whether I am on the internet or not. Even when I am working in Word or excel. Very wierd.

If anyone has any suggestions, they would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Peace,
    Eric

    Helloe fitstick,

Just kicking around a few ideas as follows...

Bring up your volume control and make sure you are using the advanced features and are showing all devices for playback particular microphone. Try muting each one by one (starting with the microphone). If I seem to stressing the mic it is one of those "been there done that" kind of things and for myself and the built in monitor mic that my monitor has muting the mic was my answer.

Also it may be finding a sweet spot for the actual volume level if you have separate speakers with it's own volume control. I usually have the systray volume set all the way up and prefer to control the volume via my speaker control. Yours may be different.

Rare but possible, once in a while when I watch tv on the computer and later close it, if I have the volume turned up I can still vaguely hear the tv, even though it is turned off or disabled. A restart takes care of that.

What ya' got sitting in the systray? Anything that uses sound for live chats etc. Close 'em and see what happens. Got any text to speech or vis versa items, again, close/disable them.

Do or try all others before the following:

Irq for your sound card sharing with anything? Sometimes an adjustment or setting change in device manager is called for.

Sound board can always be experimented with by putting in a different slot on the motherboard. Sometimes this can be a problem depending on other pci devices surrounding it.

Come to think of it plugs or connections should be checked. If one of these is not in securely you can get funky static sound from the speakers.

If your speakers aren't magnetically shielded and are near a CRT monitor, you could get that. That happened to me with an old pair of speakers I had. I was actually getting radio broadcasts over them til I moved them away from the CRT.

As Ann suggests, check your speaker connections for correct connectivity. Many cards have a few 3.5mm inputs and outputs such as for a mic, powered speakers and unpowered speakers. Clean the 3.5mm plug connectors with a handkerchief and a bit of "spit and polish ". :) Isopropyl alcohol (head cleaning fluid) is even better. Check the connectors going to the back of the speakers as well.

    Thanks for the suggestions

Thanks all for your gret suggestions, unfortunately the ones I have tried so far haven't helped. I still have to try switching the position of the sound card to see if that does anything. Hopefully I can get to that today.

    Thanks again.

    Peace,
    Eric

Just a vague possibility as it happened to me at one time. Speaker(s) itself might be faulty. I bought a pair of fairly cheap amplified speakers and right out of the box one of the speakers was giving me symptoms such as you describe. Returned, got replacement, problem gone.
