Is there anyway to extract files from a partition that has been backed up to CDs using TrueImage 8? When, after verifying the success of the backup, I tried it I got an error message, "Cannot assign a drive letter to a partition from the image archive. "

Was using XP Home on a 2.8 Ghz Celeron with 512 Meg

Welcome to the BBS foolproof. :)

Personally I've never used the extract file feature of TrueImage, so have no experience. I backup data, programmes, updates and drivers etc to a separate HDD and 2 CDRW's (call me paranoid!) and use TrueImage only for regular full system backups. The following Wilders Security Forum thread on your error goes into a lot of detail ;) about this error. Not sure if it is solved, but plenty of suggestions are put forward.

Paul thank you so much. Your reference contained the answer, at least for my problem of trying to explore an image backed up on several CDs. It can't be done from the CDs; the image has to be copied back to a single directory on the harddrive from the several CD. Then from the directory containing the several files transferred back from the CDs, in my case 17 CDs, you mount the image to a single virtual drive. I've done it, and moved through the various virtual folders. I even copied a file or two from the virtual drive, just to know it can be done. Now I can sleep easily knowing that there is something in that backup image other than of a multi-gig digital omelet, at least more easily.

I've had a few of those before. :)

    Glad you found your answer.
