Hey guys, having yet another problem. recently, xp has been booting up really slow. it goes through the memtest etc fine, until it gets to the xp home screen, where the bar scrolls up, it sits there for a minute and a half now, where it used to only take about 50 seconds to completely boot or restart.

[note, i followed the following steps about a month BEFORE the problem started]
The speed was better than ever after i followed all the steps from http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html including many of the recomendations from http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm i used mostly the "safe" label, leaving some processes running i thought i would need. All drivers are updated, all windows updates have been installed, except things like journal viewer, so i'm at a loss to what could be causing the problem. No virus's on the computer and i run both adaware and spybot every 3-4 days. It's not an urgent problem, just annoying because i know it's capable of much faster. who knows, maybe it's connected to the other problem i'm having with this comp... http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=37021

    Thanks for all your help,
    Charles

Download and install Mike Lin's StartUpCPL and uncheck everything that doesn't need to be starting up at boot. Also, check your drivers in Device Manager for updates or errors.

Reading your other thread, I wonder if you are using any UPS on your system? Brownouts can cause power supplies to go bad, and the heat can damage the mobo...etc You didn't mention how you were gaging the heat issues. Motherboard Monitor sits in your Notification Area and lets you keep an eye on temps. I fried a whole system and had similar symptoms, once, when lightning came through the internet cable. Now I have a box in between the cable and the modem.

Thanks for the reply Johanna, i ran mike's startup cpl, and also something called bootvis that was suppost to optimize the boot. the only things there i wasn't sure about were NvCplDaemon, NvMediaCenter, and nwiz. i know they're all programs in conjunction w/ my video card but i'm not sure if they are needed or not. I've used motherboard monitor for years now. I figured the powersupply was going bad so i bought a new one and replaced it, still having the strange hangups. i've tried everything to keep the heat down with the side on, nothing worked so i'm running right now w/ the side of the case off and a fan blowing into the side. current temps are 25* case and 44* cpu. playing WoW i usually get about 28* case and 48* cpu. (this is with the side off and the small fan running.) normal with the side on is something around 38* case and 55* cpu.

in any case, back to this topic, it's still booting slow, timed it, 110 seconds. last time i timed it it was 50 and that was with alot more programs booting up than are now. The problem seemed to start when i rethreaded my cables because after i installed my powersupply the cd rom nor the dvd drive was working. the dvd isn't plugged in now because when it is, neither the cd-rw or the dvd works, if i just plug in the cd-rw like i have it now, it works fine, so that narrows that problem down. Could this be the problem?
    Thanks again,

    Charles

Sorry, didn't see your question in ur post. No i don't have any UPS attached. The power has never gone out here. Do have a surge protector on it tho.
