I currently have Steganos Security Suite 7.0.4 on my PC (Win2k) and I'm trying to update it (to 7.0.7). The update routine requires the old version to be removed and the new one reinstalled (something that happens quite painlessly on my laptop). However, the process stalls whilst gathering removal information - and eventually times out. The same happens if I try to remove 7.0.4 through the Control Panel applet; running the repair option there works OK, but doesn't fix the problem. I've been through several tries and reboots, to no avail.

Entering Safe Mode doesn't allow me to run the uninstall. And I'm using an account with full Administrator rights.

I've asked Steganos via their website for help on manually uninstalling their software - I get a "we've got your message and we'll get back" response but nothing - 6 weeks and a couple of emails to try and chase them up. Their only help I get from their website help system is to install the update :(

Does anyone recognise the problem (and have a fix)? It's probably an OS problem as Norton AV 2002 also stalls when running its latest Redirector patch, which is next on my list to fix.

Have you tried reinstalling 7.04 over your existing install and then uninstalling it? It sounds like you have some file corruption or missing files somewhere.

    PeteC,

I hadn't actually tried a totally fresh installation of 7.0.4 (I'd assumed it would see another version and ask me to remove it) - it's one avenue to try if I can still find a copy.

I mentioned NAV wouldn't install the Redirector patch - well I decided to upgrade from NAV 2002 to 2005 - time to move on

NAV2005 needs to uninstall 2002, stops and tells me it needs to uninstall the old version first. The automatic uninstall just opens up the uninstall applet, which refused to uninstall NAV2002 because another version of NAV was running; I rebooted and tried uninstalling NAV2002 via the Control Panel applet. Guess what - it hangs gathering uninstall data. Argggh!!!!!!!!!

Definitely something not quite right.

I personally would take the manual approach. Stop all Steganos and Norton processes in task manager. There may also be some associated running services that would need to be stopped through start>run and type services.msc. Then search the drive for and delete all files and folders associated with the apps. Then use a registry cleaner such as RegSeeker to search for and delete any entries associated (it can search the drive for files also). Make sure you search for Symantec, Norton and NAV. Then run the cleaner in cleaning mode a couple of times to allow it to find any other leftovers, reboot and run it again. Reboot again and try installing the updated apps.

    noahdfear,

I was hoping Steganos would have replied to tell me which registry entries to delete (plus any dll's tucked away under the C:\Windows directory) - but a stoney silence from them. But that was when I thought it was just Steganos' program. Since I have an almost identical issue with NAV, I'd like to see if I can fix the uninstall problem.

Your suggestion of stopping the services (I'd stop the starting, rather than stopping them once they've started), deleting the appropriate application directories and cleaning registry traces may well be my only option, though.

    Thanks,

In the hope it may mean something to somebody (it's beyond my current Win understanding - though I'm quite happy learning  ), the Event Viewer gives the following message when the NAV uninstall stalls:

    Source: Perflib
    Category: None
    EcentID: 1015
Description: The timeout waiting for the performance data collection function "PerfProc" in the "C:\WINNT\System32\perfproc.dll" Library to finish has expired. There may be a problem with this extensible counter or the service it is collecting data from or the system may have been very busy when this call was attempted.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks to all...
