I've just installed Win ME on a P3-500 after creating new partitions and formatting them. The system properties performance tab reports running in DOS compatibility mode on all 3 partitions.

The only thing device mgr shows that's unusual is a yellow exclamation mark for "PCI Mass Storage Controller" under "Other Devices ". Attempting to reinstall the driver is not helpful.

I bought this box used and it came with nothing. Don't know what mobo is in it. It has a cd/dvd player on one ide bus and a 20GB scsi drive that sounds like it has a hacking cough when doing a cold start... then goes away after warming up for a few minutes.

No clue what the problem here is.

You'll need to find the correct IDE controller drivers first. That will require you to know what motherboard it is.

    http://www.cpuid.com/pcw.php

If installing the correct drivers doesn't fix the problem, a regedit will need to be done.

    Find:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS

Remove any "NoIDE" entries you see there. Reboot.

If that doesn't solve the problem, look here:

Is there a virus in this box?

I've installed and ran PC Wizard 2004 and found out that it's a Tabor MP440BX mobo. But have no idea how to find the appropriate driver on Gateway's website. The references I found all had to do with the sound card, which doesn't appear to be an issue here.

Did I mention the HD is SCSI, not IDE?

Anyway there's a device manager feature on PC Wizard which consistently crashes the application, even after I rebooted. Wasn't running any other apps at the time.

And the only thing at the registry key you mentioned is

    (default)
    Start 00
    StaticVxD "*IOS "

So I'm going to start on the knowledgebase article you've referenced and see what to do with that.

Meantime if you can give me another hint on how to fix the device mgr error I'd try to do that as well.

I would try the simplest first, boot up into Safe Mode, and remove all PCI Mass Storage and IDE entries, and then reboot normally. I believe this is actually your SCSI drive.
I could not find any drivers for it, ME should have the drivers for it as the computer is old enough.

That's an Intel board. And I guess there won't be any IDE entry if it's an SCSI.

Here's a link to a pdf about that board:

    ftp://download.intel.com/design/motherbd/oem/69460501.pdf

I think you'll find all the chipset drivers you'll need on this page:

    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...oductID=816&OSFullName=Windows*+Me&submit=Go!

There is no "Intel Application Accelerator" listed for that chipset line, but those are actually refined IDE drivers and I don't think they contain anything related to SCSI, anyway.

See how you make out with those.

    --------------------------------

Any idea who manufactured the drive?
