AVG 7.0 found 2 viruses how do i

    Get rid of them?
    Since it didnt quarantine them (system files?), i need to do it myself but not sure if its possible.

    The location and viruses found are:
    DocandSetting\owner\Appdata\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive.jar-c6ca0b2-2a5a5513.zip:\winmodem.exe Trojan horse Startpage.10.AH

    DocandSetting\owner\Appdata\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\archive.jar-c6ca0b2-2a5a5513.zip:\rundll32.exe Trojan horse Startpage.9.BB

    Of course, when i open the zip file, i dont see anything related to the virus...
    Apparently these just change the startpage of IE and i only use mozilla but still i'd rather get rid of them if possible.

    Funny, even after updating the AVG 6.0, it didnt find these but 7.0 did.

    Open the control panel and then the Java Plug-in. If you are using the category view, it will be under 'other control panel options'. Click the cache tab, then clear. Empty the recycle bin and you should then be clean.

    While in the Java Plug-in options, check the version in use and let us know what it is. You may need to update it.

    Thanks for the speedy response.

    I emptied the cache.
    Found versions:
    java version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0-b64
    I also see under Java Runtime Versions:
    1.4.2_04 ans 1.4.2_05

    I checked for updates and i had the latest available.
    Will run AVG again to see if they're gone.

    Well, good to hear it's clean again. The Java version 1.5.0 is the java development kit, which you may or may not use. Are you developing Java applets and applications? If not, you are safe uninstalling it.

    The JRE versions 1.4.2_04 and 1.4.2_05 are both outdated. You should uninstall and visit the Sun Java website to download the current build, JRE 1.4.2_06. After uninstalling, and before installing _06, you should open C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files and delete any Java objects present.

    This is the second time I read a reference to Java 1.4.2_06 but from the "normal" download page it is still 1.4.2_05. Is it really true that we need to register to get the latest?

    on my second visit to the page to which Dave linked, I too managed to navigate to that particular download.

    Strange, though, that Sun's "frontpage" still has 1.4.2_05 ...... :confused: ...... !

    By the way, I have cancelled the download twice. 4-5 kB/sec is totally off my scale. Which speed did You get?

    It only took a few seconds to download, broadband speed. Way much higher
    than what your getting.......

    Suggest trying again later or maybe early AM.

    I am on a 10 Mb/sec broadband connection and I know that, what I actually get depends on the hour of day (web traffic, server infarctation). In this respect, 50 kb/sec is an all time low, by a wide margin. The best I've had was from Microsoft, some 200 MB worth of Service Packs and Updates in three minutes. Symantec have good servers for LiveUpdate as well.

    Anyway, I'll try again later.
