My computer reboots every now and then and when rebooted gives error messages (not the same one everytime). I don't know whether it's the 98se or my SBC yahoo browser. The last error message I got after clicking on a favorite was: Windows\tempor~I\content.Ie5\2z07/x65. The computer went into a reboot as soon as I clicked on it.

    Can you help me?

    Hi TB,

Could be a lot of things. If it is always related to the internet, I would suspect spyware, a trojan or a virus.

If it always happens when using your browser (Internet Explorer?) try another browser (Firefox gets good raps or Opera if you're pressed for space).

If it happens off the 'net then maybe it's a hardware/driver problem.

Also, try booting to a DOS prompt and enter
    scanreg
(what do you think DOS people?)

Can you find a time it always happens?

    Matt
Rereading, you use Yahoo browser. Try uninstalling and see if there is an update.

What about the ol' "restart in dos mode and clean IE's temporary files from the dos prompt" trick.....

Since this post has specifically pointed a finger at c:\windows\temporary internet files or c:\windows\tempor~ as the culprit, how about:

Restart in dosmode and type cd\ and hit enter to clear the dos prompt of any dir/path that it may be in. This results in a cleared prompt of c:\> with nothing after it. Then type each in succession

    smartdrv and hit enter

deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1 and hit enter

exit hit enter and windows should reboot.

The temporary internet files folder will be deleted, and will be created as new on booting back into Windows. This may fix the problem, if it is connected to a damaged TIFs [Temport Internet Files] folder or index.dat.

While your there you may also wish to include the other temporary folders often recommended with the possible exception of cookies. If problem continues I would then use dosprompt cleanup of cookies.
    See:

    ------------
Your main problem seems to be infrequent random reboot and while the above glitch may have been merely coincidental this type of cleanup (once in a while) is not harmful and may add some pep back into IE. You may wish to search the archives to find out, specifically, what you maybe losing (such as history lists or cached site preferences etc.) before doing this just so you will be aware of what this cleansup. Keep in mind that your cleaning the slate of many things and all will slowly rebuild once again.

As time is an issue, for myself at the moment, coupled with shear laziness again on my part, you may wish to look this google list over to get a better idea of how difficult and broad this type of problem is. To many causes to pindown without using a process of elimination:

The help.net achives also have some past posts dealing with this issue.

    Hope this helps.... :)
