Dell Dimension 2350: After un-installing my USB printer I found "all" my usb ports do "nothing ". The device manager shows a listing of 4 USB host controllers and NO USB Root Hubs listed. Instead the device manager shows a listing of four "unknown device" and on re-boot the system tries to ID the unknown devices but I can't set them up. If I use the dell driver restore disk it tells me that I cannot use the USB setup file because I have SP1 and SP2 installed which is nwer than the file I'am trying to install. Tried re-installing the device drivers that originally used on other devices hooked up to USB ports but nothing works...Also tried instaalling a PCI to 4-port usb card and although the card sets up okay nothing plugged into the new pci to usb card works. Can anyone tell me whats up as can't find anything anywhere and really at a loss what to try next....Den.......

Just did this on another Post Scroll down to #6. Also remove the "other devices" then reboot. Windows should redetect the ports and install the software for them.

    No USB ports work

Tried that but it did not work. Problem occured before I installed SP-2, I only installed that to see if it would fix the problem....Den

Did windows detect new hardware devices when you booted?

When I rebooted windows found new devices but displayed all four USB ports as "unknown devices ". No matter what I tried I could not get the thing right. Needed to get the computer going again soooo's I formatted the hdd, re-installed XP, and everything took-off the way it should of been. Hate that I didn't get it figured out though after all the hours I spent on it but had to quit somewhere.......Den...............................

A suggestion if you don't already have SP2 loaded - you do want it but you only want to load it on a PC that is running perfectly so fix any glitches before loading the SP.

Also it is best with this one to install from CD or if you download the SP, put it on your hard drive and install from there.
