Thank you, I will try it later today. I use this often, especially for people who don't have any protection on their systems. I would recommend updating AdAware as well.

It works and looks good. The only disappointment with it is that unlike v6.0, it WON'T install on W2K3 used as a standalone workstation. I guess they figure if you can afford W2K3 Server, then you can afford to pay for AV. ;)

FWIW, the jury is still out re: AVG7 upgrade on my box. When installing it completes OK and says it's installed properly but it also lists 10 warnings that occured. They all are in reference to Registry Keys that could not be accessed or created. ?? Anyone else experience that?

The reason I post this is that since that upgrade, my XP Home has blue screened several times (never did that before, EVER). I rolled back to AVG6 and tried the upgrade again - no better - rolled back again and then uninstalled AVG6 - then installed AVG7 from safe mode - same flawed results- finally I've decided to roll back to AVG6 since it worked flawlessly for years. I'll wait for the dust to settle and see if others have any problems.

    Have you?

I tried loading it every way possible Bmoore It just isn't compatible with my box at this time. I end up getting blue screens sometime later - sometimes sooner - never right from the gate though. I find some links doing a Google that indicate others have problems too. I'll sit it out for a time and see what shakes out.

    Thanks.

When I run the installer, it does fine all the way through. When it finishes, it says the installation was a success. But there is a small sub-note under that that says "9 warnings occured, press button for details." Pressing the details button reveals:

    Local machine: installed successfully
    Installation:
Warning: Action failed for registry value HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run:AVG7_Run (Guest): creating registry value....

We can only wonder what that's all about. I have an idea it has something to do with why I can't run AVG7 without getting blue screens that say:

    Stop: 0x00000051 (0x00000001, 0xe1018178, 0xe8cf0001, 0x0000072d)

I'm sure there will be some help coming for these initial problems so I'm not too worried. I can still use AVG6 without a hitch. Come Dec. 31, they had better have this package in better shape or there will be a lot of unhappy campers. I think it's currently running 17 ~ 20 % unsatisfactory. The folks that get the pay version won't like it much when it crashes their system.

Funny thing though, I can re-install AVG6 with no problems. It was always rock solid.

Frankly, I'm not sure running any AV is worth it for my situation. I've always had some kind or the other for all these years and have NEVER had it jump on anything I bring on my drive. If you operate half way sensibly, you don't have to run scared from every little bug that comes along. SP2 helped also. YMMV however, so spare me any warnings about how dangerous it is. I'll counter by saying, cleansing a virus would be easier than fixing the above described mess. :)

BTW, I hear good things about Avast so maybe a change is in order. Maybe I'll run it until AVG 7 gets it together and by then maybe I'll just keep Avast if it proves to be the stuff.

After the 4th install, it seems to be doing fine now. It has been 18 hours and no blues. All indications were still the same during install and all the same warnings were issued. Nothing else on the system changed. All things were equal as before.

Time will tell. I don't usually have much faith in things that get all better on their own. Maybe because I downloaded Avast to the Desktop for reserve, it took one look and shaped up. :)

Wow, sorry to hear you guys are having issues with this software. In my opinion, lets trash the upgrade path, and go with a clean install. By the way, lets get rid of all remnents of Version 6 before proceeding. Sound like a plan?

Installing over the old is actually according to their own instructions so it should be fine. Trust me, I tried it every possible other way to no avail. It just finally decided to work on its own - nothing definitive that I did. I think the wind direction may have affected it. :D

I've had no problem with either Avast Home or AVG 7 Free. The jury is still out on which I prefer. I don't have them installed simultaenously. It's one or the other.

What I use for AV backup are online scans. The link will give you several free online scans. I find that RAV and Panda catch a bunch of dormant viruses.

Some of these backdoors don't get caught by AVG unless they are getting executed.
