    Hi,

I fear I'm in trouble. I cannot access "My documents" folder being located in partition D: any more. I had to reload Windows (XP SP 2), but forgot to remove the checkbox "make this folder private" before doing a C: format. Although I use the same user name and password, I cannot access that folder! Is there any help to access it. It has normally a size of 120 MB, but now it indicates 0 bytes when looking at its properties. This info appears "D:\Ralf's Documents is not accessible. Access denied." when trying to doubleclick it. :(

Try Taking Ownership of your My Documents folder as described in this MS KB article.

I am a little puzzled as to why it now appears to be 0 bytes.

folder says 0 bytes because he does not have access to any files in folder including filesize information. windows needs access to calculate size of files.

A way to estimate the size of the folder contents

Even though the folder will show 0 bytes (and give you a heart attack, at least it did me), you can move up a level in the folder hiearchy, like "Documents and Settings ", and check it's properties. You'll see the sum of the size of contents in all the the subfolders, including the one you can't access. You can then subtract out the size of the other subfolders and get the piece of mind that your data is still there.

    Beating the dead horse:

Try giving yourself permission to access the folder. Easily done in a command window:

Type cacls "C:\System Volume Information" /E /G username:F and press enter. Watch for on screen confirmation to ensure success. Change "Username" to whatever yours is of course.

Then you will have full access and the details re: size will also show up.

For more information on using the XP access modifier, type cacls in a command line and press enter. You'll get the full help screen for it.
