I just removed XP from a friends machine, and installed Win2K Pro. Now when it boots, a screen comes up asking me which OS I want, Win2K or "Microsoft Whistler Personal Edition ". I reformatted this hard drive! Where is this coming from, and how can I remove it? Thanks!

    Hello neuwirth,
    welcome to the Windows BBS ...... :) ...... !

I had "the same" thing happening when I reformated a harddisk with XP-home and installed XP-pro instead.

I guess it is the same on Win2K-pro:

Right-click "My computer" > Properties > Advanced > "Start and reset" (or what's it called in english) > Edit boot.ini by removing the line referring to "Microsoft Whistler Personal Edition ".

On a second thought, I would wait for confirmation on this but ...... ;) ...... if You are brave ...... ......

i concur with Christer's advice. I dont remember if w2k will let you edit it from that screen. You may have to unhide 'super-hidden' files, then un-readonly C:\BOOT.INI and remove the offending line.

    I will reply

and let you know the results of my efforts. The PC is not at my house, so it may be a few days before I find out if this works. Thanks!

    Perhaps a somewhat safer way:

Launch msconfig from the RUN window. Click the Boot.ini tab and then the "Check all Boot paths" button. That may auto fix your prob.

    Nice one 'dude!

When I checked my paths it said OK. What can neuwirth expect? An automatic "repair" thingy?

It will delete any invalid paths. It will report the erroneous line and ask for your blessing first before deleting it for you.

Aside: I have seen people anguish over the boot.ini file and how to edit it properly and have always wondered why they didn't use this feature. I suppose it's just not obvious enough.

Aside2: Did you realize that the boot.ini file isn't absolutely necessary in order to boot a normal Windows installation. I can delete it and still boot since XP merely looks on the root for the bootloader files when no other directions are given.

I'm glad a revisited this thread. I now realize that we were in the Win 2k forum and my answer was generally directed at XP users. The msconfig tool is not natively available in 2k but it can be added.

To make up for my faux pas, here is the link for download information about Msconfig.exe for use on win2k.

I must have scanned the first post by neuwirth and seen only the XP reference. BTW, since he just uninstalled XP he will no doubt have access to the msconfig.exe file directly from the XP disk. No download needed.
