I use eTrust antivirus. I want to change the setting in the Security center to "Not monitored" for the antivirus tab. I did it for the Firewall tab but can't find out how to do it for antivirus.

OLDSALTY--When you have the Security Center window open, on the left hand side, click on the double arrow next to Resources, then you can click on "Change the way Security Center alerts me ".

    Also from Security Center Help
"To use antivirus software that Windows doesn't find
Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Windows checks to make sure that an antivirus program is installed on your computer, that it's running, and that it's up to date. However, Windows does not detect all antivirus programs, and some antivirus programs don't report their status to Windows.

If you receive an alert about your virus protection software or the status in the Security Center indicates that the antivirus program on your computer needs attention, but you know that it is installed and up to date, you can use the procedure below to stop receiving the security alerts. You should only do this if you are sure that you have a full, up-to-date antivirus program installed on your computer and that real-time scanning, which checks every file before it is opened or used, is turned on.

To specify that you are using an antivirus program that Windows does not find:

To open the Security Center, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Security Center.
In the Security Center, under Virus Protection, click Recommendations.
In the Recommendations dialog box, select the I have antivirus software that I'll monitor myself check box, and then click OK.
    Notes

The Recommendations button is not available when your Virus Protection setting is marked ON.
When you use this procedure, the Security Center displays your Virus Protection setting as Unknown, and does not send you alerts.
If your computer is part of a domain (a group of computers on a network), your security settings are typically managed by your network administrator. In this case, the Security Center does not display your security status or send alerts "

I read you question, did you look at the screen shot I linked to? If you uncheck the box & click Ok as I said in my screen capture the Security Center will no longer monitor your AV software. Like I said it worked for me, if it doesn't work for you for some reason I don't have a clue why, sorry

It does not stop monitoring the a/v it only stops the alerts. I never had the alerts turned on since I installed sp2.

I read your question. And now have of of my own which I do have to ask.

WHY ???? do you not want Windows Monitong the AV ??????????????

I use AVG and there is an icon down in my systray that turns GRAY when the AV needs updating. This is the same in both XP and Win98SE.

Not monitoring the AV makes no sense to me.

I use CA eTrust a/v. It keeps itself up to date. If something else monitors it there is some kind of over head and a process has to be running that I do not need. Why would I want un-necessary processes running?

    Side question:
How did you get the icon turned on?

OK. It is your machine. But I would not call AV monitoring being overhead. I would be more likely to call it a bit of added protection.

As far as I can figure Windows is just checking to see if you do have an Anti Virus program running. Again I can not see that as being overhead. I call it a good thing.

But again. It is your call to make.

    OLDSALTY--
How do you know Windows is monitoring your AV if you make the suggested changes?

To turn off the security center all together, click start>run and type services.msc. In the list of services, double click on the one named security center and where it says startup type, change it to disabled.

I would suggest that you think about this a bit though. As BillyBob said, it's added protection. Some viruses disable your antivirus program. If this should happen (or if for any other reason the AV isn't working) the security center will promptly notify you of this. Same goes for your firewall. Just a thought....

Oops. Almost forgot. To turn off the security center you have to first open security center and then click the link that says change the way security center alerts me. Uncheck all three items and then disable the service. If one of the three items remains checked, the service will be enabled again the next time you start windows.

Do you realize that if you shut down the security center you are shutting down the XP Firewall too ?

If you are using it that is.

Ron, I think his question was not if you want to monitor it but rather if you have all the suggested items disabled, how can you tell if it is monitoring your AV or not.

You seem to be saying that it is but I'm also not clear what is providing you with that piece of information.

I don't think this is right. It's my understanding that the service that the firewall is dependent on is the Application Layer Gateway Service. Checking it's dependencies shows that it has none. If you check the dependencies of the Security Center service, it shows that no system components depend on the Security Center service.

OK. I just checked the Security Center. In the Firewall part there is a recommendations tab.

When selecting it I see there is a tab to ENABLE Windows Firewall.

Which is saying that I do not have it enabled. But that is not the question right now.

This is what I was basing my thoughts on.

I know of no other place to enable/disable the XP firewall. Am I missing something ?
