This quote below from another thread reminded me of something that I have questions about:
I purchased Ghost 8 a while ago and have used it on many systems in my home and on other's systems. I only had it installed on one system at home and from then on use the floppy boots disks.

When ghost first starts, it displays the splash screen stating 'this version licensed to my name" and then prompts if want to "mark drives as usable by ghost ". I have always chosen "yes ". What happens if you choose "no ". As I recall, the prompt stated s/g re forensics if choose not to mark drives.

    Tony,
I read up on the Ghost 2003 manual and it says that the harddrives MUST be marked. It does not tell what happens if You say no but the way I understand the word MUST, is that it realy isn't an option but mandatory.

Tony, I'm not absolutely sure but I think Ghost is asking you if you will allow it to write to the MBR area so that some person doing data recovery would have a record of the image having been made. It's a sort of fingerprint I suppose since you can run the "Finger" command and it will retrieve that information. That would require that Ghost be resident on the drive and in the PATH of course. I have Ghost but I don't use it and it's not presently installed. I'll be glad to load it back up if you need a more definite answer. I would just be looking in the Manual though.

In that same vein, do you have the manual that is widely recommended from here? It may make mention of that step.

I do know that once you answer "Yes" it doesn't ask on subsequent runs. Would that mean it never updates that data? Maybe it updates without asking since you gave permission once. I noticed it asked when I installed a new drive. That figures. I wonder if doing a fdisk /mbr would wipe it?

Some rainy day I'll pursue those answers and let you know. Feel free to beat me to it. :D

I've read the radified guides before.

The "mark drive ", per symantec site and the manual, means the drive is marked by Ghost the first time teh floppy is booted on aany system. I is part of the license agreement splash scfreen and once the drive is marked, that agreement no longer appears on subsequent uses of the floppy.

I recall something on that splash screen about choosing 'no' to mark the drive and a blurb about forensics. I presume that 'no' can be selected and ghost will still run. But I do not have a system around here that I have not use teh floppy on anymore, all my systems have been imaged! Looks like next trip to Best Buy will see me booting a demo system with the ghost floppy so I can again see that 'forensics' message!

I also don't have ghost installed to any hard drives and don't want to reload it on the win 98 system that had it cause it's just a pita to config the system again afterwards cause ghost package installs a lot of unneeded stuff and services. No need for you to load it back up.

Thanks guys, this all makes sense now, esp the forensic data.

My pleasure Tony since I learned from the process too. I tried rewriting the MBR but it didn't reset the drive to the clean state that causes Ghost to make that inquiry. I suspect the entire boot sector that is dedicated to the MBR would have to be cleared. I lost interest at that point. I'll wait for that "rainy day" and pursue that. :D
