    While in safe mode, click start then run and type msconfig, then hit enter. On the boot.ini tab, uncheck the box labeled /safeboot. OK out and allow restart.

    Another thing you could do if unable to access msconfig is to edit the boot.ini file. Right click My Computer and select properties, then advanced tab. Under startup and recovery, click settings, then edit. Notepad should open with text similar to the following.

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /safeboot:minimal

    Remove the /safeboot:minimal text and close, saving the changes. Then OK out and reboot.

    The only real difference is that hers will say XP Home Edition. It is possible, is she has installed SP2, that it may look like this;

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect exit /NoExecute=OptIn /safeboot:minimal

    The only editing you need be concerned with is removing the /safeboot:minimal text, regardless of whatever else follows the OS identification.

    A couple of notes about the lines in boot.ini

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows= "Microsoft Windows XP Professional "

    The part between the quote marks is simply the text that will display if you have multiple startup choices and a time delay so you can see them. The one above will offer "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" as a choice but if you changed that text to "Rampaging Rubber Duckys " then that choice would still start XP-pro.

    As a suggestion and considering the stuff you usually have to do to start in safe mode, having both safe and normal modes as startup options and a delay of 4-5 seconds might be worth having. It certainly is for me and my boot.ini for XP-pro looks like

    [boot loader]
    timeout=5
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Normal" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS= "Safe Mode" /fastdetect /safeboot /sos /bootlog

    I have 5 seconds to decide on Normal or Safe Mode startup and it defaults to 'Normal' if I don't pick one.

    I have to boot this machine once a day (work and I can't leave it running) but the second or two it takes me to press ENTER has never caused any big delay in my work day and usually I turn it on, go for coffee, and am at a login screen when I get back.

    The Pro version has features that were removed from the Home edition. More security options, ability to join a domain, some utilities that home lacks.

    The Home version is fine for most home users but for some, the extra money for the Pro version is well worth it.
