Here's my problem. i recently installed a new motherboard and i am now having problems accessing my CD/DVD drives in win 2k. I have a dual boot system with Win98 and do not have this problem when i run 98, also, i don't have the problem if i start win 2k in safe mode.

    here is exactly what happens:

if i have a disk in one of the drives and double click on my computer the disk begins to spin and will not stop. The "my computer" window appears but remains blank. This is usually as far as it gets. Sometimes, however, eventually all the icons appear even for the CD/DVD drives but if i try to open or explore the disk the window locks up and requires task manager to get out.

    any help would be appreciated

    thanx

Since you didn't say if you were having this problem before installing a new motherboard, I'll assume you weren't which leads me to believe the problem is with the MB. These symtoms are strange but I can think of two areas to look at it.

    1. Make sure the BIOS on your new MB is compatible with Windows 2000. There may also be a BIOS upgrade available from the MB manufacturer.
    2. Check out Device Manager to see if there are any devices with an exclamation mark next to them. There may not be any but you can also try right clicking on the computer name at the top of the device tree and clicking Scan for hardware changes. PnP might see your new MB and install the new driver(s) for it.

I'm sure it has something to do with drivers that is loading in normal mode that is causing your problem. If your CD/DVD drives show up in Device Manager, try removing them, rebooting then see if Windows 2000 automatically installs them again. You may get the same drivers back, but then again, the appropriate ones may install instead. There may also be updated CD/DVD drivers available at the manufacturer's site.

Possibly another thing to look at would be the controller(s) your drives are using. Most likely they are on the motherboard but Device Manager and/or Event Viewer might be telling you something about the controller having problems.

    Scott,

Just wanted to say thanx for all your help. I finally got everything working properly. It seems it was some sort of conflict with my printer driver. Don't know why that would affect it and only figured it out by pure luck. I knew i needed to reinstall my printer driver but I just had no immediate need to do so until this afternoon. For some reason the only driver on the printer disk that dosen't conflict is in french but it will do till i can download a current eng. one. once again thanx for your help you really let me know where to focus my efforts.

    Patrick
