Will Win XP report a "problem" i.e. a change in hardware if I install a new DVD Burner and make my old CD Burner the secondary slave?

AceH, I have changed, or installed several optical drives and hard drives in my XP computers with no problem whatsoever. Just make sure your jumpers are set correctly. Normally the the burner is the primary and connected to the end connector of the cable and the read only drive is the secondary.

    bmartin,

I want to install a DVD burner (as primary) and move my CD burner as secondary.

No problem, Just make sure your jumpers are set correctly. Set your DVD burner jumper on the back of the hardware to the master position and plug it in at the end of the cable. Set the jumper for the CD burner to the slave or secondary position and connect it to the connector next to the end. XP should recognize the hardware when you boot up.

If the jumpers on the drives are set for Master and Slave, it doesn't matter which drive is plugged into which connector. Only when the jumpers are set for Cable Select is the end connector designated Master and the middle connector Slave.
