Hi Sim, and welcome to the BBS!

Rename the following key and the context menu should disappear:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6}\InProcServer32

Just put any letter in front of the name InProcServer32 to make it something such as ZInProcServer32 That way you can bring the function back when you need to. I suggest you place this key in your "Favorites" in the toolbar of Regedit so you'll have a record of your work for a memory aid.

If you just want to remove it from the context menu, go to this page, scroll down to, download and install "cnxtedit.zip." It will allow you to edit the right click menu without all the manual registry editing.

If you want to disable sharing and security completely, try Control Panel>Network Connections, right click on your network connection, go to Properties and uncheck "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks," click OK.

Lots of information on various file sharing configurations on this page which may provide other options.

One reason is because Windows XP has a NASTY habit of restarting things that we shutdown.

And all because Mr. Gates & Company THINK we need them.

Unless as mentioned we get into the Registry and edit things there. But if we DO NOT GET ALL KEYS INVOLVED that is useless too.

Also if we make ANY of this type of change that we want PERMANENT, it is good idea to shutwown and restart System Restore. Otherwise any and all changes we make will be UNDONE if we do need to use a Restore point.

That is just what I mean MS is making to TOUGHER.

You may have it disabled now. But I would not be a bit surpeised to see it re-enabled if you do a System Restore.
