In Windows 98 on the START button there was a Documents listing which listed the last 15 downloads you made or files you opened. Does Windows XP Home with SP2 have this? If so where is it? Does it list more than 15 listings? Thanks!

    I'm on XP-pro but I guess it's the same on XP-home:

Right-click the START button > Properties > Customize > Advanced and at the bottom, check the box for "Show a list ... "

How many? I'm not sure but my list is at fifteen and I think that's the limit.

Yes, same on Home Edition and it saves the last 15.

Hmmm, interesting, as I have no such selection available. Granted, I use the Windows Classic display with the traditional Start menu, but even if I switch to XP's Luna display and select the XP style Start menu there's no such entry.

Jim - maybe this is what they meant since I don't see the exact entry either. Nothing similar in classic but a possible with Luna.

    Newt ...

"Curioser and curioser ", said Lewis Carroll's Alice. "Is a puzzlement!" said the king, in The King and I. "Beats me!" sez I.

I have absolutely nothing there, in either Luna or Classic ...

Probably used a 3rd party tool to hide them. My Tweaking Toolbox XP does that...

I use StartMenu Tweaker to have the Control Panel appear as a sub-menu of the Classic Start menu (see thumbnail), and there IS a setting to remove recent docs, but I don't have it activated.

    Documents list

Thanks guys. I am using XP home with the START menu that the OS came with and I do not see the line whose box I was supposed to put a check in.
Many others didn't see it either. Curiouser and curiouser indeed! Any other suggestions?

    Liam ...

Right on the money, except that in my case it was a conflict between TweakUI and StartMenu Tweaker ... checked in one, unchecked in the other. Hence, Recent Documents didn't show up, either on the Start menu OR on the Advanced tab of the Start menu properties sheet.

    Albert ...

It sounds as though you're using a plain vanilla XP installation, with no tweaking programs installed, so I don't know why you're not seeing Recent Documents on the Start menu.

You might want to download and install TweakUI 2.10, just to make certain that your computer is set the way you want it. The entry you want is found by clicking on Explorer, rather than on Taskbar and Start menu, as you might expect.

Possible interest if a registry policy hkey is suspected due to a regpatch tweak or 3rd party tweaker:
    http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/8

Notice related sublinks listed at or near the bottom.

Thinking outloud...or possibly "Blonde Day" related "not thinking at all "....
Could this be a global option or one of those changes that may effect "All Users" and may only be accessible to profiles with administrator or full control rights? I wonder if any other restriction such as "disallowing changes to the startmenu "... ?? "Locking down the desktop ". Would these hide or remove this option. (hmmm..Is there even such a word as "disallowing? :) )

    Ann ...

I didn't mention the Registry, since Albert describes himself as a beginner, but that's what TweakUI and StartMenu Tweaker do ... make changes to the Registry. And, they do it the easy way, which is why they were created in the first place.

If I were a beginner, that site would absolutely terrify me!

Sorry  My head was still dizzily filled by all those little possible hmmm's. In my distraction, I "neglected to" and "certainly should have" included a disclaimer that this was a "quick peek for exploratory purposes only ". That knowledge of making any registry changes and the precautions that should be done prior to these changes should be known. My focus was on the topic in general rather than the poster and I got swept away with the threaded conversation.

I'm in and out of the registry so many times a day that I guess I'm getting a little lax in any "Posting Precautions" Should-Do's. I will make a note to myself to watch for this in the future.

    On the flipside:
If I were a beginner that site would absolutely fasinate me, as it has/had and still does. It is filled with resources for building a strong "Knowledge Foundation Base" for folding, bending and mutilating the reg.

It's not easy to get all the terminology right and we will probably have a perfectly confusing situation when I ( a Swede) try to translate what appears on my screen to English ...... :p ...... and the person who reads it tries to translate to Chinese.

My next OS will be the English version ...... ;) ...... !
