I have read but none touched on this subject. I am trying to install xp pro on an older HP PII 400 with 192mb ram. It goes through the blue screen setup formats the HD and gets to the XP screen that tells you how many minutes remain, when it gets to about 35 minutes left the screen freezes, I have tried to repair and it does the same thing. Can someone speculate as to what is happening. Thank you.

Usually if this happens with around the same amount of time left to install Windows each time, it is because setup reaches a stage where it is discovering your hardware, and loading default drivers for it, and setup hits a piece of hardware that is a) Not compatible with the version of Windows you are installing, or b) Faulty or c) Having a resource conflict with another piece of hardware in your PC. All could cause a lockup.

Try removing as much hardware as you can and still setup windows. I mean take out internal modems, sounds cards (if not onboard), network cards, or any card in fact other than your video card. Uplug any drives you wont need to run setup, like a second CD player of any kind, DVD player/writer, a second hard disk drive, even the floppy if you boot from the Windows CD and dont have SCSI or RAID drivers to load at the beginning of setup from floppy.

After you get Windows on the machine, you can re-install the removed hardware piece by piece until the machine misbehaves again. And then you will know.

Also check if all your hardware is compatible with the version of Windows you are installing. Each item in the PC should be checked by going to its manufacturer's website support section, and checking FAQs for your product. Also if your hardware's manufacturer has a driver for the version of Windows you are installing available on thier website, it will be compatible, and if not, it wont be.

This will give you a lot to eliminate as your problem.
