Does anyone know what "SSDP Discovery Service" is? It is listed under Services in the System Configuration Utility. It seems to be responsible for my system hanging up on startup. Through numerous restarts and using selective startup I found that the problem is gone when this item is not selected. But what is it? It says the manufacturer is Microsoft. Is it something that I am going to miss? Also, is there anywhere I can get a list of just what all of those "Services" are that are listed? There are an awful lot of them.

    Thanks

It's a component of the Universal Plug and Play Accessory that you have evidently elected to install. If you don't want or need it, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components > and scroll to Networking Services > highlight it and select Details > then uncheck the box for Universal Plug and Play. OK your way out and you'll be rid of it.

It's not loaded by default so I am guessing you did it and maybe don't really need it. Are you operating on a Network where it would be to any advantage to have that type of detection?

If you do need it you must be sure you have all the latest security updates for XP since it has a birth defect that needs patching.
