After formatting the partition on my HD this was the result :

    "Formatting 8.03M
    Format complete

    8,288,192 bytes total disk space
    8,288,192 bytes available on disk

4,096 bytes in each allocation unit
2,002 allocation units available on disk "

Then I started the Win98 installation.I got this error message:

" NOT ENOUGH FREE DISK SPACE
YOU NEED AT LEAST 205 MEGABYTES

I have a 8 GB HD formatted to 8 GB.

Note that under system it says NTFS.I need FAT 32.How do I get it?

    Hi Jerry,

    "FORMATING 8.03M "...M for megabytes?

8,288,192 bytes equals 8.288192 megabytes not gigabytes.

Maybe check that you have not made the partition 8mb instead of 8gb.

Yes 8,288,192 bytes is 8 megabytes not 8 GB,

To change to fat32, you must boot with a Windows 98 systems disk and run fdisk. You need to remove the existing partitions and re-add them. Then restart PC with boot disk again, and format. It will now be fat32.

If you have trouble making / getting a Windows 98 boot disk go to this address and download this boot disk maker for 98.

    http://users.tpg.com.au/adsl5muj/boot98se.exe

It is my own secondary web space. File is safe to run. If you are unsure, just make sure your antivirus is up to date before you download it. You simply run this executable with a blank disk in your floppy drive.

You need to use Fdisk to delete your Primary Partition, the create a new Primary Partition, and let it use the Maximum Size and and make the partition Active. Reboot and then format.
When prompted at the beginning of Fdisk to Enable Large Disk Support, Y is the answer to use.

I am doing this from memory so syntax of the real thing may vary slightly but you should be able to connect the dots with my info

Boot from the win98 boot floppy disk

run fdisk from the floppy (if you have a true 98 boot disk fdisk will be on it)

Say Yes to Enable Large Disk Support

Choose Delete Partition, then Delete Non DOS Partition from next options menu that appears <=====key step in your case=====

Select partition number to remove (will be 1 if you only have 1 partition)

    Confirm delete

Back at the first menu, Choose Create Primary Partition, make partition active when asked.

Once done restart your PC and boot to floppy again

type format C from the a:\ prompt

If it doesnt work, you may have another problem.

Go get Delpart, unzip and copy it to your Win98 bootdisk, it will fit on it.
Type "delpart" at the A:\> prompt, and use it to delete everything it finds. Then use Fdisk to create your Primary Partition.
BTW, I recently came across this problem, on a WD drive. It was originally partitioned and formatted with the WD tools CD, then a windows installation. It was then later formatted with a boot floppy. When scandisk was run as part of the windows install, it reported the primary FAT was corrupted, and the fix was to replace with the backup. Windows setup reported the drive as too small.
I solved this one with a WD CD.
Maybe something here about drive manufactures' tools and M$ tools?
