I have a Windows XP machine with 512MB of memory and an 80GB HD that's half used. I guess it's about 2 years old.

    Problem:
Turned on PC and it goes to black screen that displays the Video card, and shows that it detecsts the keyboard and mouse and at the bottom there is one option. "F1 Boot from network..... "(something to this effect).

when I press F1 it lists 4 options to boot from
    1. Removable device
    2. Hard drive
    3. Cd rom
    4. (don't remember)

Using the first two options I was able to boot up in SAFE MODE. But everything is very very very sTow.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jermaine (welcome to the BBS),

Sounds like the BIOS is having trouble loading (communicating with) a piece of hardware. If you have added any hardware recently, try removing it.

You could open the case and carefully clean out the dust, especially from fans and heatsinks.

Startup with the case open and check all the fans are running freely.

Reseat cable connections and add-in cards (be carefull of your electrostatics).

Look at the motherboard for buldging or leaking capacitors.

It may be a harddrive or power supply problem.

Post and let us know if you can spot anything.

    Matt

Yes i agree with mattman, but also it could be a driver not loading properly and windows cannot start.

try this as well if matts advice doesnt work.

Before you start, it would be a good idea if you had the latest versions of the drivers for your various hardware handy.

Go into windows in safe mode.

Go to device manager (ask for help how to do this if needed)

Remove your video card, sound card, internal modem if any, network card and any other cards you have in your PC, by right clicking on hardware in list and choose uninstall. Reboot your PC, and provide drivers as requested, and windows will set up your hardware again. Sometimes drivers become corrupt and simply need replacing. Just something else to try.

Assume you mean slow. In that case an infection like a virus or worm should also be excluded as a possibility. See this
