Edit note: this could be a PCMCIA problem. Would appreciate any hardware folks who know about those things to take a read through and put in a comment. If that comment is, "Newt is nuts - that can't happen ", that will be fine. Newt

 I am trying to get a friends laptop to address the network. I fear this is an iterative process. I will list my efforts to date and the symptoms. The computer is a HP Pavilion laptop running win 2000. I have tried two different pcimia cards, usb to ethernet adapter and a wireless USB d-link 120 adapter. Each initially would not allow ping and would not network. The status indicating they were sending but not receiving. I uninstalled client and protocol then reinstalled after a full shutdown. I can now ping 127.0.0.1. The adapter lights the light on the router the pcimia card and the adapter both indicate send but no receive. I have downloaded and installed new drivers for all devices. I updated the bios and all the normal things.
As I said the symptoms are the same for three different devices and several configurations with the only setup that works being the wireless connection.
Currently I have dhcp enabled and a very basic TCP/IP configuration and am using a router as a test vehicle. I have insured the cable is good and see the light on the router port light during test. I am unable to ping the router although the 127.0.0.1 ping is successful. The trey indication however intermittently shows unconnected and status show transmitting but no receiving.
Appreciate any guidance you may offer. The IPConfig data for two configurations is below.

This subnet mask places the adapter on a completely different network than the other devices including the router. It needs to be the same as your other one 255.255.255.0 and the IP address will need to be in the same range as well so based on the IP displayed for connection 8, any unused address from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254

You can use this tool to check your addresses and make sure they will work correctly on the same subnet.

Now I am going to display ignorance. Is this a preset? I thought that this was set when the dhcp assigned a IP. I don't believe I did anything to set this in the wireless configuration. Forgive I am woefully deficient in networking knowledge.

New data point. I manually set the following configuration:
    Windows 2000 IP Configuration

    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : qdc-lt
    Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
    IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 7:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Belkin USB Ethernet Adapter
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-05-1B-00-42-BB
    DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
    Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 192.168.0.250
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

I was able to ping the server but when I tried to ping www.msn.com it timed out. Interestingly it did identify the IP number for the site. Does this provide any additional actionable information?

Do you have any other computers on the network, and if so can they connect to the internet?

What device/computer has the address 192.168.0.1?

The fact that a ping of msn resulted in a resolution of the name to an IP address indicates that the laptop is able to connect to a DNS server (or relay). Does:

    tracert www.msn.com

get out of your network? That is does it get beyond 192.168.0.1?

192.168.0.1 is the d-link 614+ router. I will try tracert and pinging beyond the router this evening and report back my success. Thanks for all recommendations.

new data point I was able to ping yahoo and google and several others and actually got the google and yahoo home pages up but when I tried to go to others it seemed to time out. The pings seemed sort of long to me in the TTLs mid 200s. Any thoughts?

Try running a tracert (trace route) to an internet site you can ping. Send the results to a text file and post a copy of the file contents here. For instance, if you can ping www.yahoo.com then open a cmd window via start => run => cmd then
    Code:
    tracert www.yahoo.com > c:\trace.txt
and paste the contents of c:\trace.txt to a reply. Note that while the trace is running, you won't seen any results on screen until it finishes.

Based on the results you are seeing, I suspect the router although I'm not at all positive about that.

Any possible way to try with a different router or with a direct PC to broadband modem connection?

How about any available firmware updates for the router? If there is one, the update should improve router performance or else make it fail completely but in case of a failure, it wasn't long for this world anyway/

The fact that the router is supporting three other devices perfectly and will support this fully if connected via wireless makes me think that the problem may not be in the router. Also recall that this unit has exhibited the same results on at least two other networks Anything else that you think might meet that set of parameters?

Local hardware issues of some sort then. Maybe.

I am functionally hardware illiterate. No idea if there could be problems with the PCMCIA slot(s) or what but yup, I had overlooked the fact that the router is fine with other systems and that this system chokes other places.

I will move this to the hardware section for you. Surely someone there can give some ideas for how to check the card slot(s) or if it is even possible for them to partly fail.

Otherwise, I'm pretty much out of ideas.

    It works on Wireless.

    It does not work hardwired.

    HHMMMMM !!!

I think that I would be trying a new card or whatever the cable plugs into on the offending machine.

I just recently had problems with one machine untill I powered Down. Removed the NIC from one slot and put it in another. Re-powered the machine and BINGO !! On line I go.

    OR.

If the Network connection is built in .

Shut it down and try a plugin card.

Let me recap a bit so we are all on the same page. The lap[top has a pcmcia card slot in which I have tried two cards same symptoms. It also has a usb into which I have connected a wireless adapter (d-link) it works fine. I then tried a beltek direct connection adapter in the USB slot. The results are as described above and shown in the tracert. I think one of the PCMcia cards I used was bad which may have obscured the problem in the pcmcia slot. The main problem at the moment is the disparity of operation between use of the belkin adapter and the wireless adapter. This problem has manifested itself on various networks so don't believe it is my router that is the common problem (d-link 614+). I will be glad to provide any amplification but not sure what will help. Thanks in advance for all recommendations.

For the lack of any further ideas ( wild or otherwise ) it looks like you have narrowed it right down to the pcmcia card slot. Or the hard/software behind it.

Unfortunatly the fact that I still can not connect to the internet effectively thru the USB Beltek adapter hardwired to the router does not let me define that as the problem. There is still something I have not been able to define that I must identify. The situation now stands that I can connect normally using the wireless connected to the USB I can ping and tracert as shown above using the Belkin adapter hardwired but cannot communicate effectivly. I no longer have the known good PCMCIA card to see if the card would emulate the the behavior of the Belkin.

    Hi.

Two things. Be sure to shut down any firewall that may be running and be sure to run "Internet Options" in the control panel, "Connections ", "Add" and create a broadband internet connection.

    Giles,
Again I will display my ignorance. Is this necessary even though this is just one of many computers on an existing network? And is this appropriate in both win98 and 2000?
