When I attempt to use Windows XP Backup and Restore program, I get the message, "The files for recovery diskette could not be created. The operation was cancelled ". I am attempting to backup to an external hdd. Any suggestions to correct this problem or should I just buy an off the shelf program and forget Win XP? Thank you ...

If you are trying to back up to an ex hd, why are you using floppies? Just copy the data to the ex hd. Do you use XP Home or Pro? Do you have your XP cd?

Thank you for the comments. I now better understand the error message. I do not have the XP cd only the Restore cd. I'm told that the Ntbackup.msi file is not on the restore cd. Using the XP Backup and Restore program and the "advanced mode ", I've been able to backup the computer hard drive to my external hard drive. Reading some of your earlier comments, I've physically disconnected the hard drive and stored it on the "shelf ". Good forum, very useful to someone who has a problem from time to time. Thank you again ...
