I am experimenting with Composer and trying to create a page. I am not familiar with it and it has me tearing my hair. When I insert an image I am unable to type in the blank space next to the image. And I cannot figure out how to put a midi on the page...Any help with these problems is appreciated...or if you can direct me to the proper place to find instructions...I read all the info on the website about creating a page, but it does not address these problems.

    TIA

    Dixie

    Hi Dixie,

So you're going to be a web author now. It's a real hoot setting up your first web page, but as you so aptly described, can make one pull one's hair out!

O.K., I've never used Composer either, but even though it all looks complicated, it really isn't. I did a Google search and came up with numerous help pages for Netscape Composer. For your search use: Embed sound file + Netscape Composer. You will be amazed at all the help sites.

To insert text next to your image, you have to tell Composer where you want the text. That is done when you select the "Insert" tab. Look at the "Text alignment and wrapping around images" and make your selection there.

To embed a sound file, click on Insert | HTML Tag
    Enter this tag:
    <embed src=tiitle.mid autostart=true loop=false width=0 height=0>
    Click "Verify "
    Click "OK "

The "Verify" will check the validity of your HTML tag. If for any reason it is incorrect, you won't be able to insert the tag.

Now, the above tag will play a sound on your web page, and anyone using Netscape will be able to hear your sound file. IE users won't hear the sound file, however. You will have to use more tags in order for it to be cross browser compatible.

Follow the above instructions for entering the following tags. Note: each tag must be entered separately:

    1. <EMBED src= "title.mid" autostart=true loop=false volume=100
    hidden=true>
    2. <NOEMBED>
    3. <BGSOUND src= "title.mid ">
    4. </NOEMBED>

    Have fun!

    Ramona :D

Thanks,Ramona...I knew I could count on you...I will print this out and see what I can do.

As for IE users...who cares...serves them right for using IE.(ugh):p :D

Aw...you would say the same thing!

    But...you said this:
To insert text next to your image, you have to tell Composer where you want the text. That is done when you select the "Insert" tab. Look at the "Text alignment and wrapping around images" and make your selection there.

But when I click on the *Insert* tab, there is nothing there that even resembles this choice...nothing even close...????? Where did you see it...it's not on my Composer...

However, I was able to insert a midi file...Thanks!

    Hi Dixie,

I've uploaded an image of the "Insert" Properties sheet here: http://home.att.net/~cherokee65/index5.html

The first blank to fill in is Image Location

The next area is Text alignment and wrapping around image.

Let me know if this is still not clear.

Thanks Ramona...I have given up...images were fine when I *previewed* the page but when I published it to my site all that was there instead of the image was a box with what looked like a broken stamp up in the left hand corner...no images were shown on the page. I followed the instructions exactly and, as I said, the images were fine but do not show on the final page. I can't find any explanation of the problem anywhere. I just won't bother with it as it is not worth the aggravation. My ISP told me that Composer was outdated and of no use any more and that was the reason things won't work...I guess they are right in their assessment. They told me to go find an HTML editor instead...ya right...as if I would try to learn HTML at my age!
    Thanks anyway,
    :(

Yes, the whole thing was uploaded at the same time and all the picture files were there...but the page only showed the box with that stamplike thing that I told you about...so I just threw out the whole page and figured mt ISP was probably right about Composer...and as I don't know how to write HTML I gave up on the whole thing...

What is that broken stamp thing that appears instead of the image??? Do you know? Does it have a meaning?

I don't know why the images didn't show as they were fine in the preview...

    Hi Dixie,

That means your image hasn't been uploaded. I just did a simple page, using one image and had no problem: Garfield

Perhaps, when you click on "Publish" you aren't filling in the information correctly for your ISP's upload procedure. My ISP has a page for Composer, which gives details on how to upload the files. Look HERE for Earthlink's publishing Help.

You will need to direct your upload to the URL of your ISP's upload page.

Does the text show up O.K. on your web page?

According to WS_FTP and to the Earthlink webmaster the images files and the text files were both uploaded to the site.I have the E'link settings and they are correct both for Composer and for WS_FTP...this is why I cannot understand why the images don't show. Yes, the text does show correctly. It is a puzzle...

The midis played OK in the preview but did not on the site...they said it was because the midis were on my HD...well,where else would they be? They do not give any explanation about how to rectify this which just adds to the confusion.
Something is obviously wrong but Netscape is a little scarce on details...when they say something is wrong..like the midis being on my HD, they assume I know how to fix it...I don't know and they do not tell me...
Am I confused? I would say that assessment is correct...LOL:confused:

    Dixie,

Upload the midi files and image files separately then. They should have been uploaded when you "published" your page in Composer.

I can't help you with your ISP, and if you have a toll free number I would call and insist that someone talk you thru the problem. You're paying big bucks, so get your $$ worth!

The midi files did upload but when I click on them I get a message that they cannot be played because the midis are on my HD and there is no way for anyone viewing the site to connect to something on my computer...that makes sense but where else would they be but on my HD...??? Of course they are on my HD in my midi collection!

As for Earthlink they give no support beyond giving you the settings...they say the website is free and because it is free, they can give no support other than the settings. Their advice to me was to use an HTML editor and to forget about Composer...as if everybody knew how to write HTML...so the site is there and just cannot be used...a total of 80MB...for use only by HTML experts...

Thanks anyway. Ramona...I thought I would give it one more try but it still didn't work. Please don't waste any more time on it...It is impossible...

    Dixie,

    It isn't impossible.

Go to your HTTP or FTP upload page.

Select the midi files you have on your page, from your HD, and upload them to your web page

Select the image files on your page, from your HD, and upload them to your web page

No one can see or hear those files if they are on your PC. You need to put the files (upload) on the Internet, and your web page. When a user connects to your web page, they aren't connecting to your PC.... entienda?

Whether or not you use Composer, you have to upload any image/sound files you intend to insert/embed into a web page.

    This will work. ;)

OK, but won't people just see a bunch of files on the web page, instead of a page, or in addition to the page?? I have never seen a bunch of files on anyone's page...picture me scratching my head...:p

    Dixie,

People will see exactly what you have created. Text, images, and they will hear your midi files.

If you will pull up your web page, select View|Page Source, there is the HTML which makes up your web page.

You will have an HTML tag similar to this one:
    < img SRC= "garf-pool.gif" height=126 width=140 >

This is the tag in my Composer page for the Garfield in the swimming pool. If the garf-pool.gif file hadn't been uploaded to my web site, you would be viewing the broken image, which you are experiencing.

Your web site has a directory, and in that directory should be listed all the files that have been uploaded. That is where the gif, midi, jpg, etc., files are called from... not your HD. The "img src" tag, means just that, the source for the image. This is your web site.

I don't understand why everything wasn't uploaded when you "published" with Composer.

Here's something else you can do that will certainly work:

Do you still have the file in Composer? If so, open the file, click on View|Page Source, and copy everything, then paste it into Notepad. Save the file with a .txt extension. Then do a Save As and save with an .html extension. Then upload that file (the one with the .html extension) to your web site, and publish.

    Ramona :D

P.S. the only HTML editor I have ever used with my web pages is Notepad. You can't beat it!

    You said:

    can't beat it!

But, I don't write HTML so I can't use notepad to make a page!I am stuck with Composer because you don't need to know HTML for composer...

The page is supposed to be 10MB...but when I got to the end of it, it was only .164MB and there was no room to add anything more as there was no more space...why does E'link call it 10 MB???

    Dixie,

Somewhere in the Earthlink Publishing site there should be a listing of your files and the size of each file. Do the files included in your web page add up to 10MB? From what I see in your Index they don't even come close!
