Every since I updated with SP2 (XP) I'm having trouble using the LINK BY EMAIL function from FILE/SEND in IE. When I used this feature before it always brought up my OE program. Now I get a box that says PROFILE NAME and lists MICROSOFT OUTLOOK as a choice. I don't want to use that. I remember having this problem before, a long time ago, but can't remember where to go to fix it. Any ideas out there? It would be MUCH appreciated!

    :)

    Hi Panda

Try this, in IE click Tools/Internet Options, click the Programs tab.
You might be able to use the drop-down menu beside E-mail:
to change it back to OE.

No go. That line is empty. No choices to make. Where can I fill that in?

    Thanks.

See if this does it, open Outlook Express and click Tools/Options.
In the General tab under "Default Messaging Programs" if it states
"This application is NOT the default Mail handler ", click "Make Default "
    and Apply.

Not a happy camper right now. I changed it to say MAKE DEFAULT/APPLY then OK. I close the window. I open it back up and it's BACK to NOT DEFAULT. I tried changing it several times and it won't stay put!!!!!! Am lost as to what to do now.

    Thanks for the help.....

This is pre sp2 but it still may hold true. It's worth a shot:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showpost.php?p=76570&postcount=9

    Try this:

Close IE and/or OE, click Start| Run and enter this command line, complete with quotes, spaces and the /reg switch:

    "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

    Reboot.

From within InternetExplorer's menubar select Tools>internet options>programs tab> and on the line email does it say "Outlook Express" or have this as choice in the dropdrown [accessible by arrow on the right]? If not make it so. "Same for newsgroups ". Or sometimes to make these changes stick you have to use the IE icon from within the control panel. This may be one of those occassions.

Make sure the line at the bottom is checked for IE to check to make sure it is the default browser.

Then open OutlookExpress and click Tools>Options, and at the bottom of the General tab, verify that OE is set as the default. If it is, the "Make Default" button will be grayed out. If not, click the button and try again. May need to click apply and then okay.

    May need to reboot?

There must be a gremlin in my computer! In IE it does list OE as my dafault mail. I went ahead and tried the copy/paste in RUN anyway. Rebooted. Was able to change the default in OE and it stuck this time. Thought I was on a roll. I rebooted again. Went to IE and tried a SEND. GRRRRRRRR! It still gives me the MS Outlook option. Can't figure out why. Any more ideas out there?

    Thanks for trying, Goddez1.

    Awesome!

Thank you sooooooooo much, Bill. That link did the trick. I had already tried the 3 fixes and all that was left to try was the Registry one. Really hated going there, but knew I had to. The DLLPath value wasn't listed. I put it in. Rebooted. And, VOILA! IT WORKS! I am so glad someone found the solution. It was driving me nuts, as I send links a lot to friends and hated doing a copy/open IE/paste when I knew it was quicker to use the SEND VIA EMAIL choice in IE.

YOU HAVE MADE MY DAY!!! I'll put this one in my computer notebook for future reference.

    :)

    Yahoo!

It appears that I did not go on or include step two. Shame on me but in steps super Hero Bmoore1129, as quoted from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q306098&

    Edit the Windows Registry
If you can register Outlook Express as the default mail handler, but you still cannot send mail from mail links or other programs by using Outlook Express, you need to add a data string to the default mail client key in the registry.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To add the data string to the default mail client key: 1. Start Registry Editor; click Start, click Run, and then type regedit.
    2. Locate the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express
    3. In the left pane, click Outlook Express. Two values should be displayed in the right pane: one is Default, which has a value of Outlook Express, and the other is DLLPath, which contains the path to Msoe.dll on your computer.
    4. If the DLLPath value is not present, click Edit, point to New, and then click String Value.
    5. New Value #1 is displayed, with the text selected. Type DllPath, and then press the ENTER key.
    6. Double-click the new DLLPath value to open it. In the Value Data box, type the path to the Msoe.dll file on your computer, for example:
    drive:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSOE.DLL
    7. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.
    8. Try to send mail from a link or another program.

I'm so glad this is behind you. :) and yeah to Bmoore1129!
