    Hi.

I am having a very similar problem to this - http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=37070
I am trying to connect a friend’s computer to my home network. I have a linksys wireless router/4 port switch, with my own two desktops hooked up via cat5 and my laptop hooking up via wireless. These all work fine.
We have fitted a Netgear WG311 wireless PCI card to my friends PC and according to the network icon in the taskbar it is connected to my access point and says the signal strength is excellent. - however it is not hooked up and cannot browse the web.
By running ipconfig I can see the IP Address is 169.254.148.69 and the Subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 - which are both incorrect.
If I change the network connection from auto IP and give it a static ip which should work on my network - 192.168.1.150 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 - then it still does not connect properly. but if I change my laptops settings to these - it connects fine.
When I boot up the pc in safe mode and check device manager, under network adapters there are 10 separate listings and if I try and uninstall any of them i get "Failed to uninstall device. The device may be required to boot up the computer "

Any advice on what to try next?
    Many thanks

im not savvy on netgear products, but genericlly, wireless routers have various permissions set on them, from WEP, to association by mac permissions. Did you lock your router down to keep your next door neighbors off your net?

The fact that you are getting signal, but no access, even when hand coded, implies the router can see it, but wont let him talk.

    Hi Joe.

Most of the time i do not use the wifi so I disable it from the router control panel.

At the moment it is enabled but with no WEP. I thought i'd have it wide open to help the troubleshooting procedure.

I have now tried a repair using the XP cd incase that might fix the offending setting but that didn't do anything.
Even though the PC thinks it is connected - my router's DHCP clients list does not show it as connected

I am at a loss for what to try next.

Check the SSID on both the access point and the wireless card match in thier settngs. And check the workgroups on all PCs match your friends computer.

I also assume you have something shared to see when browsing the network.

    Hi Dez.

I am actually not trying to get this machine on my network to share files. I just want it to connect to the router.
I run a Medal of Honor LAN night once a week at my house and I just need it hooked up for this.
I have done this loads of times with other wifi pc's - normally I just set it to auto ip - if it isn't already and it hooks up fine and we can play.
It is only this pc that is having a problem. I find it odd that there is ten entries under network adapters and I cannot uninstall any of them - despite that fact that this machine has only ever used dial up internet access before we fitted the wifi card. I have even taken out the wifi card and fitted it to my other half's pc and it hooked up straight away.
There must be something on my friends pc that is stopping it connecting properly, but I just cannot find out what it is

Check the services applet of said computer and verify that all of the needed services are able to load and run, e.g. DHCP Client, Network Connections, Network Locater Awareness, Wireless Zero Config., etc. These services must be set to automatic and started in order to get connectivity.
