Trying to pull data over from desktop to laptop via ethernet crossover cable. Laptop did not have ethernet port; installed one. All well with that. Connected cable but cannot "see" the desktop either in network (never got instructions to network it) or as drive in My Computer on laptop. Tried "finding" it through network troubleshooting. Not much experience with networking. My laptop was part of a client's network during one consulting job for a while. Please help. Must get files off desktop ASAP and no longer have monitor for desktop. Thanks in advance.

Try this, if you are using XP, go to your start menu, connect to: show all connections, click on create new connection, the new connection wizard will open, then click advanced, this will allow you to set up a direct connection. You will have to set this up on both computers. One must be set up as a host, and the other a client. Try this, is should work.
