My son has an older PC with Win 95. He has not turned in on for over a year
and it worked OK at that time. However, he does not know if any of his kids
    fooled around with it :(
I only talked with him over the phone--He can boot to Windows menu>Safe,
but does not get a desktop, only a C prompt and the A<C<D drives are not recognized. He has a ERD, 95 Set up CD and floppy, but he is told , drivers missing. There could be other info that he told me, but not being there, I do
    not know what else occurs.

Any suggestions as how to proceed , before I try to get it working will be appreciated. Joe R

The problem with the 95 boot floppy is that it does not provide anything for the CD, the drivers missing message?
You can use a 98 boot floppy to begin the install of Win95, the first process is really nothing more than copying files. When setup does the first reboot, the floppy will no longer be necessary.
Go to Bootdisk, and get the file for 98 SE OEM, Doubleclick the downloaded file with a floppy in the drive and it will be created.
When you use the floppy, choose With CD ROM support. There will be a message giving you the drive letter for the CD drive, it will not be the usual letter for the drive. This message appears just before the A:\> appears.

Mark: Thanks for the quick reply. The boot link should be in everyone bookmarks. I'll be going to my son's PC sometime this week. He has a
working PC that I can use to get the boot dics. Will let you know how it
works out. Thanks again. Joe R.

For the lack of any other ideas at the moment.

Could this be a possible case of DEAD Battery ?

Go for the 98SUD. If that does not work then the BIOS may be messed up ( dead Battery )

    Dead Battery was a good thought-checked it>3.2 v

Downloaded 95 boot from "boot disk ". No luck. Will try the 98SE that Mark suggested..

I was able to run scandisk til it stopped. It fixed 5 errors before stopping.
After that, all I could get was "Disk I/O error-Replace Disk and press any key "

When I first started, F8 gave me the menu. I tried several options with no success.

Mark: Tried all 3 boot disks: 2 win 95 and the 98SE.
No luck, get the same message as in the last post.

Getting frustrated :( Where can I go from here??
    Anywhere, no matter how drastic.

Flash the BIOS? if I can get the file from Gateway.

If you have another computer handy, take the drive out of the computer and add it as a slave to the second computer, and see if you have a problem with it. It may be dead.
