Hi Stan, When it hangs and you use Task manager to end the process, what process are we dealing with?

This will take all the information you can supply or else we can try the "Usual Methods," like running sfc /scannow or a repair install.

Go to the Run window and type in eventvwr.msc and then double click each of the three information lines, Applications - Security - System, and scan the info while looking for any error reports that match your system lock times. Any luck?

Didn't work so i log off ....next log on and then the problem is gone.

I also viewed eventlog (nice tip) but there were no faults on the specified time.

Run System File Checker and see if that solves your problem ....

Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow - note the space and have your XP install CD handy.

SFC will run and exit - to see which files, if any, were replaced look in Event Viewer.

If SFC doesnt fix it, my guess is that you have a bad property sheet handler.

I would go on a clean up spree using ShellExView http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html Lots of ways to approach the actual, I like to disable everything that isnt from microsoft, and add them back in, half at a time until the problem extension is identified.
