I've been browsing around the mozilla.org site, but I can't find installation instructions for the 0.10 version of Firefox (I'm currently using 0.9.2; have downloaded but not yet installed 0.10). I know that in the past you were supposed to uninstall previous versions before installing a new one -- which I know how to do BUT... if I do that, I'll probably lose all my bookmarks, right? Is there a way to retain them somehow (I think with IE I could export/import them to a file somehow)?
    Thanks!

    Rebecca,

You definitely want to uninstall your current version of Firefox, and install Version 0.10.1 PR, which was released on 10/01. See this thread for details and download site: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=35822
As you are running Version 0.9.2, you will need to install the full version.

Your Profile will not be disturbed by the uninstall of 0.9.2, and install of 0.10.1. Nothing will be lost, but it is always expedient to back up the Profile before doing any install/uninstalls. Frequent backups are always advisable... ;)

    Thank you, Ramona!
Please bear with me here, because even though I listed my computer experience as "intermediate ", since joining here I've realized I should have put "neophyte ".
When you talk about my "profile ", is that something to do with Firefox or with Windows (I'm running ME). How do I back it up?
I do pretty frequent backups of "My Documents ", and when I used to use IE, I used to back up my bookmarks there using the export command, but I don't know anything about backing up "profiles ". Help, please!

    Rebecca,

By backing up your Profile, I mean to copy the Profiles folder and then paste it into your backup folder. Create a folder on your C: drive, and name it e.g., C:\Backup or C:\Firefox Backup, your choice...

The Profiles folder for Windows ME is located here:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Rebecca,
it is not necessary to uninstall, if you download the .zip file, unzip it, and make a desktop shortcut. I have created a new profile for 1.0 pr, and entered the profile switch in the shortcut Target (right click|properties)
I do this all the time with temporary program. 1.0 is a preview release, after all, and I don't want anything like that to be in charge).

A mighty belated thank you to you both for your responses! Westside, where do I find the .zip file to download? Any time I click downloading a Windows version, the .exe files always comes up as my only choice!
    Thanks!

    Mozilla Firefox

I have delayed installing the new Firefox for the same reason as rebecca. I figured out how to find the profile folder in the Firefox folder (I have XP), after trying to find it in Windows. I copied it to My Documents. I am intimidated by the process of setting up a second version of Firefox and developing a new profile. I have tons of bookmarks, many for use in courses I teach. I don't want to risk losing them. I also don't understand the switch reference. Can I just uninstall 9.0, install the new version, and import the Profile? ( I appreciate all of the informative comments on this issue) Please reply to SED4OHIO @neo.rr.com. I haven't changed my email address for this site yet.

    OIRISHO,

Setting up a new Profile is not as complicated as it sometimes sounds. It's really a copy/paste procedure. If you are using the Zipfile for Firefox, right click, and drag the firefox.exe file to the Desktop and select "Create Shortcut ". Right click the shortcut and to the end of the Target field, add one space, then type in: -p profilemanager. The Target field will then look like this:
    "C:\Program Files\thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p profilemanager

Once you have created a new Profile for Firefox, open a web page which requires you to enter your password, this will create a password file, e.g., 12345678.s, Now close Firefox.

Following is a list of the files to copy to the new Profile:

    • bookmarks.html
    • cert7/8.db (Security Certificates)
    • cookies.txt
    • cookperm.txt (cookie and image permissions)
    • custom.dic (Dictionary)
    • history.mab (Collected Addresses)
    • hostperm.1 (Supersedes cookperm.txt in older versions)
    • key3.db (Key Database - Certificates, Passwords, etc.)
    • persdict.dat (Mozilla Dictionary)
    • search.rdf (Search Plugins in the Sidebar)
    • user.js (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)
    • usercontent.css (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)
    • userchrome.css (If you have created the file, if not disregard.)

Now that you have created a password file, e.g., 12345678.s
    • Next: copy the somenumber.s password file from the OLD salted folder, to the new salted folder.
    • Rename the newly created password file to X12345678.s
    • Rename the OLD password file to 12345678.s

Follow the same procedure for somenumbers.w (Fill Form Data)

It is recommended that you do NOT copy the following files:

    • Cache Folder
    • chrome.rdf
    • chrome/*.jar file
    • downloads.rdf file
    • history.dat
    • localstore.rdf file
    • prefs.js
    • xul.mfl file

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Ramona,

You make reference to 2 different versions of Firefox ... 1.10.1 PR and 0.10.1

I've been unable to find version 1.10.1

It depends on the preference. For some reason, Mozilla went backwards from 0.9.3 to 0.10.1. I never accepted that, and always referred to 1.01 PR. The 1.10.1 must be a typo. In any event from the preview release to the release candidate, we went back to more normal numbering.

    sirgerald,

Sorry for the confusion, as the naming of that Version was very unclear, and referred to both ways, as Westside clarified for you. The 1.10.1 was definitely a typo and corrected to read 0.10.1.

The most current Version came out yesterday, which is Version 1.0 Release Candidate 2, if you're interested. The target date for 1.0 final is Nov. 9, so you might want to wait for the final version instead.

Ramona: Been reading here and waiting for 1.0 as was suggested in an earlier post.

The following Q. has probably been asked before but I want to make sure.
I have been using NS7.0 with only 1 profile.

When it is released Nov. 9th, can I download it to a new folder and still
keep and use NS 7.0 when I want to? and use the same profile in both?

You can use NS7.0, as you please, but Firefox will require its own profile. There is nothing to worry about, since you will be prompted if you need it, but you can use the 7.0 setting, if you are prompted.
Firefox and Netscape are two entirely different programs, with something in common, which is not shared, but rather imported by Firefox.

    Daddad,

Indeed, Firefox really is an excellent browser. It did take me some time to get used to the new settings location, etc., but now I love it!

The November 9 date isn't set in stone, but it is the "target" date. I have an idea it will be released then, as so far not seeing anything major being reported.

    joeskys,

When you download and install Firefox 1.0, Firefox creates a Profile folder which is separate from Netscape/Mozilla. The Firefox install creates the Profile folder here: ~\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. So as you can see, there is no danger of Firefox grabbing a Netscape or Mozilla Profile.

I think you have an enjoyable experience ahead of you.

I always thought you were a Mozilla person first and foremost. Have you switched to Firefox now... from Moz 1.7.3? What about your email? Don't you find the break between the two a bit awkward? Just curious.
