When I try and install XP I get half way through and during the "Installing devices" routine get the following messages:
Windows could not load the installer for DISPLAY. Contact your hardware vendor for assistance.

Pressing OK leads to another caution for another "could not load" device. This happens perhaps 10 - 15 times until the BLUE SCREEN tells me the setup is terminated.

    The microsoft answer at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prmd_stp_fvlq.asp
    makes no sense.

This is a clean install on a reformatted FAT32 Hard drive (8.4 gb) with a surface scan revealing no errors. This same hard drive had dual Win98se and XP installed in the past with no problems. Setup is handled by the CD at boot time.

What is most irritating is the fact this setup worked in the past, but caused so many problems now.

I hope someone has an answer because searches for answers on the Internet have not been successful.

I'm clutching at straws here (quite a few infact! )
It looks to my guess to be a problem with your graphics card. Try reseating your graphics card in the slot again, (if you don't have integrated graphics?) and set your BIOS setups to default. Remove all internal cards except the graphics card and only have the keyboard, mouse and monitor connected externally.

Another straw. ;) What happens if you format the partition with NTFS instead of FAT32?

    I tried the following:

Reformatted using Maxblast to NTFS - Same problem.

Reformatted using Maxblast to FAT32 - Installed WIN98SE - Installed XP from WIN98SE, same problem.

I will take your advice and alter the bios to default, maybe turn off USB and other non essential items to see the results. The video process is on the motherboard, there are no PCI/ISA cards attached.

This is a computer that belongs to a non-profit organization so I am trying to save them money but perhaps there is a problem with memory or a motherboard defect that didn't exist before when they had dual boot. (Win98SE/XP)

    Thanks for the advice
