    When I get as far as the dialog box that tracks the download and install progress, I'll wait and wait but nothing happens. Then I get a message about a problem in IE and have to restart it. It doesn't fix it thogh. I have a similar problem with downloading a file from another site; I click on a link and no download ever starts. What could be wrong? I have downloads enabled. :confused:

    first delete your cookies and temporary internet files; then do a "Mend Internet Explorer" (Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs - choose "Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools ", click Add/Remove, there's a "Mend" option)

    then have another go... let us know if it works pls?

    good luck & best wishes, HJ

    I repaired IE lasr night. Didn't help. Deleting files and cookies didn't help. Could you do me a favor and go to https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm . See what happens when you go to the Download area and click on either of those two links. (You'll have to scroll down). When I do, I wait and wait, then finally hit "Stop" and get a "no page to display" message. :(

    Hi again

    (taking it that you mean the download links for agnis-as.exe and agnis-as.zip)

    I could download from both links with no problem - both right-click>Save Target and left click (go through the dialogue box) work OK for me

    (using IE6SP1 fully patched on W98SE)

    ==

    umm. clutching at straws :eek:

    let's try following the process through. If you right-click on, say, agnis-as.zip and do a "Save Target as..." -

    1st step should be a dialogue titled "File Download..." (getting file information - contacting server and checking the file's there and available etc.) Have to get through this to get...

    2nd step - a dialogue titled "Save Target As..." allowing you to navigate to the folder you want on your computer

    do you get these dialogue boxes or does it stop short, pls?

    ==

    only other thing - shot in the dark - can you download from any sites at all? (along the lines that something funny might be going on because it's htpps ie secure)

    best wishes, HJ

    I get "Save Target As..." when I right-click (I'm using ie-spyad.exe) but cannot understand why it just keeps running when I left-click on it as I always have with no problem before. I l click on ie-spyad.exe and finally have to hit stop as I said.

    Hi

    oh dear! I checked with ie-spyad.exe, that one works fine for me too.

    I keep thinking that it's to do with security settings for htpps somehow - unless you have some kind of overenthusiastic "guardian" disallowing you from downloading a potentially harmful EXE

    and (at least part of) WindowsUpdate uses htpps

    do you get the same behaviour with the ie-spyad.zip link, pls?

    ==

    I've put a test page here upon which there's the most basic download link I can make - no secure htpps or anything, all kept as simple as possible - which should serve a small ZIP file (19kB); which would allow you to prove/disprove the htpps thing

    if you left click on that and it doesn't work then we know it's something weird at your end (perhaps "guardian" software, or something so badly broken in IE that it won't "Mend "); if it does work it's a sure pointer to your security settings

    (work - for me - means: left click gets file information, then produces the dialogue Open / Save / Cancel / More Info - from which I can save the file)

    ==

    about the best I can do at the moment - UK 4:30AM, gotta get some kip! But will check back tomorrow.

    best wishes, HJ.

    KingG, do you happen to have a problem with any Secure Web Sites? The IE Spyads site is a secure site with 128 bit encryption.
    Do you happen to have Spybot's TeaTimer running when trying to download a EXE file?

    HJ, did not work on l'click. As a matter of fact, when I clicked the links to the messages I've gotten on this, it's given me the same trouble. I finally have to cut and paste the link to my address bar to get here.

    I hadn't thought about Spybot before. I'll try to dusable it and see what happens. :confused:

    thanks for ruling out security settings etc...
    whoa! that puts a very different slant onto things...
    ...taking it that you mean the links in the notification emails which send you to the appropriate BBS page; and that you cannot click directly on a link (what happens if you try this pls?) but that can copy the shortcut and paste it into browser address bar without trouble.
    Could you let us know what "guardians" you are using pls? (firewall, antivirus, antispyware etc.) - and knowing what email client you are using could also help...

    best wishes, HJ

    Hold the. Methinks problem solved! Was getting an error message on one page every time I tried yo do a find. "...Error 35. Incompatible version of RPC stub." It had to do with a file called oleaut32.dll. Replaced it with another version and now everything seems to be working fine! Rhanks for your help and suggestions.
