The startup pane in Word 2002 wont' appear automatically. Microsoft identified this as an issue in:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810162

They said that this had been fixed with Office SP3. Well, I have SP3 installed (I checked under the Help/About... menu) and I still have the same problem. No luck with searching the office help site.

    Any suggestions?

Have you seen this? It may be worth a shot.

I have not tried this myself but came across the above suggestion looking for a fix that may apply to you. I ran across this suggestion in this other public board thread:
    http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...m=eUp69nWZEHA.1448@TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl#link1

I have included the link above because you may wish to use regedit to manually check and see if the proper hkeys and their values are being created.

    Success at Last

I used the second suggestion, the one by Beth Melton: now the startup pane works as it should under Word.

    Thanks for the suggestion :D

    Hi Rudymill,

I'm happy to see that this particular problem is behind you and your most welcome. :)

==========For the Archives {in case the links eventually die out}===
This issue was corrected in the Office to the SP-3 patch. However for
Word you need to add the following Reg hack:

    In the Registry navigate to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options

Create a DWord value using the following:

    Name: ShowWorkPaneAtStartup
    Value: 1

Take a look at this article for if you need more information:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=810162

Note: Disregard the hotfix instructions since the fix was included in
    SP-3.

Additionally, the Reg hack Don MI provided will also help rectify this
issue but the task pane will not be dismissed after creating a new
document or opening a document from the task pane.

That's my preferred setting but if you want it to behave as it did
before the PDF add-in then use the ShowWorkPaneAtStartup Reg hack.

If you do not want to manually modify the Registry then here's a
couple add-ins (one for Word and another for Excel): you can use to
    make these modifications for you
    http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=325

Note it does not include the Reg hack for ShowWorkPaneAtStartup but
the code in the add-in works around this issue.

I'm using MS Office XP Professional. After installing the MS Remove Hidden Data Tool the other day I noted that the task pane would no longer display in Word 2002, though it did display in the other office programs. Tried several things in an effort to resolve the problem before coming here and doing a search. Foolish me, you think I would have learned by now to come here first.

At any rate, in doing the search I found this post. I downloaded and installed SP3 and then tried the manual reg hack noted in goddez1 post of August 19th http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...m=eUp69nWZEHA.1448@TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl#link1 but this did not resolve the problem.

I then downloaded and installed the Word Task Pane Controller program mentioned in goddez1 other link http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=325 and bingo, not only did this resolve the problem of the task pane not displaying on startup, but it gives me the option of deciding when and whether the task pane is displayed at all, which is an option that I've always wondered why MS hadn't included in their office programs.

Thanks for posting the links Ann, you saved me from acquiring a few more gray hairs. :D

    Hi Rod,
Who needs more grey hair? I'm glad I could help and even more pleased to see the help.net search function of past posts being put to good use. Your most welcome and thank you for the update.
