Yup, that's the way it should work. All hard drives (or partitions on them) get letters, then the ram drive, then the cdrom. ;)

    Hi, KevinSaul

First of I was not able to locate a bootable CD (or startup CD). even though I tried to change the booting sequence so that it started with CD-ROM.
    Thanks.
The best way, I think, is to boot with floppy.

I've been following these posts carefully as I have a similar problem.

The original thread was to get a clean install of Win95. As I see it, it ended up with a 98 install. Did I miss something?

Ram Drive has been mentioned several times. I found it at "http://www.superspeed.com/ " At a cost of $39.95 for my XP Home.
Is this the same one you are talking about?, or do I have it already and
do not know it!! Joe R.

Well, if you are, I am too. bamtall must have decided to go with 98. Have to wait for him/her to answer just why.
No, that's not what we're talking about. It's a ram drive like we're talking about but the one we're talking about here is created when you boot from a windows 98 startup disk. A ram drive is a sort of virtual drive that's created within ram. The computer sees it the same as if it was another hard drive, so it get's a drive letter assigned to it before the cdrom. This will make your cdrom drive letter change from what it usually is in windows to the next available one. If your cdrom is normally d: it will become e:. So, when you boot from a win98 startup disk your cdrom will always be one letter further down the alphabet then it normally is in windows. The startup disk contains compressed files and the compressed files are extracted to the ram drive. If you boot from a win98 floppy disk and then reboot to windows, the ram drive and all of it's contents will be lost so when you get back into windows the drive letters will remain just as they were before you booted from the floppy. The one that you posted the link to works much the same way except that it's re-created everytime you start windows.

    Reason of switching to Win98

    Joeskys, Zander,

Yes, you are right. Initially, I planned to install Win95. But later I changed to Win98. The reason was that upgrade to Xp was possible from Win98, not from Win95, I read it somewhere.
However the steps should be the same, except that Win98 booting floppy is required.
    Sorry for the confusion.
