I have an interesting problem. The system seems to talk out but cannot receive. I have tried 2 PCMIA cards and a USB to ethernet adapter all display exactly the same symptoms. I am sure this is some sort of setup problem but have no idea where to go to fix it. Any recommendation welcome. Not sure what information I can provide to help in diagnosis at this point.
    Thanks.

I assume this is a laptop because of the PCMCIA cards, right? I deal with a lot of these at work.

What do you mean that it will talk out but not recieve? How do you know it's sending if it doesn't recieve? when you look at the connection status, what does it show under activity? Can you ping? traceroute?

Did this connection work before? Did you do anything, then find out it no longer works?

Try totally removing all of the drivers and reinstalling one adapter. I know driver issues can be a real pain. Finally, are you sure that a least one of the adapters you've used are good.

Thanks for the reply. I will try to answer them all. First I am sure that two of the three devices I used, 1 pcmia card and the usb adapter work. The laptop is not mine but that of a friend. It did work and I am not sure what he changed. The only clue I have is the following. When I cam to the picture it had a network setup on the laptop. At work I with the help of our network gut updated the bios and drivers. It then would ping both of the pcmia cards.when I got home I found I could ping neither. I looked atthe status and It showed 160 or so transmission but no receive. The light was on on the router. Last night I found something that I am not familiar on the machine it is netbios files and there is a netbios folder on the control pannel looking through them I found sometyhing that resets every 180 minutes wondering if this is associated. Last piece of info even when the lights are lit on the router I get a not connected indication in the icon on the tray. Sorry to be so ignorant in thsi area but if you ask I will try to give you all the indications I have. Thanks for the guidance.

Update. On the recommendation of a friend I uninstalled and reinstalled the network client and TCIp protocols. I can now ping both the pcimia and usb adapter with 127.0.0.1 the PCIMIA when connected to the router does not light a light the usb adapter does light it. The friend suggested if the uninstall and reinstall did not work that I reinstall win2k don't really want to do that if I can help it. Any other suggestions? Both unist indicate sending and neither indicates receiving. Bot show on the tray as not connected.

OK, you can ping 127.0.0.1 but I assume you can't ping out, like www.google.com?
Under the NIC settings, look at the advanced settings. Look for the Link Speed and Duplex settings (may be separate settings or combined). For home or general use they should be Auto, unless you have hard coded network speed of 100mbs. Try changing the speed/duplex settings.

Here I regret I must display ignorance. I have looked at the advanced options in the network settings and I do not find the adjustment you indicated. Are you talking about the controls under hardware under the my computer? You are correct under your assumption that I can only ping as far ast the 127.0.0.1, I am unable to ping the router.
    Thanks for your patience

I believe that I have. The problem has manifested itself in several different physical locations the latest with a cable I know to be good. I am fairly sure the problem is software due to the troubleshooting above and the different hardware involved yet still the same problem.

Regards jheibeck comment above. I went in the nic settings under the my computer hardware. I am using w2K on that computer and in the section that normally has speed control (at least in the XP computer I checked it against) there is flow control and one other but no speed listing. Is this a part of the problem I am experiencing? If so what is recommended to fix it?

Sorry, my bad. Flow control is the same as speed. There should also be a Duplex setting. As I said these two settings may be listed separatly or together in one setting.

If listed together it will look something like:

    Auto Detect
    10Mbs/Half Duplex
    10Mbs/Full Duplex
    100Mbs/Half Duplex
    100Mbs/Full Duplex

Is this problem on a work network? or at home. or both. Where I work, the network is hard coded to 100Mbs/Half Duplex, so no other setting combo will work, not even Auto.

This is what I was looking for:
network link selection 100bts full duplex/100bts half duplex/10bt full duplex/10bt half duplex/auto negotiation.

You didn't say if this was at work or home, but if you've tried all of the selections above, I'm out of ideas. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

 Trying tro resurrect this thread with additional information. I took the laptop to a more knowledgable person this weekend. He installed a CD version of linux and got much the same results as I had. Everything seems normal but the card indicates not connected. So I am now trying tfathoom what component could cause that same indication in two operating systems in both a pcmcia card and a USB adapter. This is a true different one any thoughts?

Going to close this item and open a new one in the networking as that appears to be where this would more appropriatly be. Thanks for the advice so far.
