Yea, I have a bunch of problems. First of all, my cpu usage is pretty jumpy sometimes. It is usually fine, but every once in a while it starts jumping around for no reason. I check task manager and nothing seems out of the ordinary. I have run McAfee Virus scan professional, ad-aware, and spybot s&d and haven;t come up with anything. Another problem is shutting down. It sometimes takes my computer around 3 or more minutes to shut down. I really have no idea about this one. My final problem is updating ad-aware. when I load it, it says new referance file available, so I start the update, which starts at 5%, stops, and to the right of it says Webupdate Complete and stops. However at the main page it says that my Referance-file is not loaded or is invalid. Should I just try re-installing ad-aware? Ayway, here is my ht log in case you need it. I see some suspicious things, but I don't really know much. Thank you very much for your help!

Update: I tried getting Ad-Aware SE Personal and every time I try to install I get the "Ad-Aware SE Personal has encountered a problem and needs to close. " I have downloaded the installer 3 times and get that every time. Any suggestions are helpful.

Yes to getting Ad-Aware SE. Probably good to uninstall the version you have now and also to save the install file to your HD and run it from there.

You need the latest version of Hijackthis. 1.98.2 is available and it finds and removes lots of stuff the older version can't deal with.

Before you try any of that, do a general cleaning of the PC. From the browser, dump all temporary internet files including off-line, dump cookies, dump history, close IE.

From My Computer, right-click on C:\, click on Properties and then on the Disk Cleanup button. Let it remove all the files other than 'compress old files' which does work but takes a while and doesn't gain you much.

After updating spybot and running it, loading Ad-Aware SE, updating and running it, post a new HJT log with the latest version.

Thanks for the help Newt. I updated HT, and have tried to up date Ad-Aware. I uninstalled the previous version, but when I try to install SE, it keeps saying that it has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried downloading the installer to my hd 3 times, but will keep trying. I am running the Cleanup processes you reccomended, but keep getting errors that various .man files are "required for windows to run properly and have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, windows must restore the original versions of these files." Options are Retry, More Information, and Cancel. As we speak I just got a new one that says what I quoted above, yet it has the cd and cd-rom logo and says "Insert your now" with those spaces there and nothing written. When I get all this resolved I will again post my updated HT log. Again, thank you for the help!

Try clicking on start, on run, keying in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and clicking OK. You will need your XP CD and if you did a service pack after the original XP install, you may need that CD as well.

Wow, I must have really ******* something up because after doing the disk cleanup, most of the files and programs on my computer were gone. I went from about 47 gigs of used space to 18. Well anyway, when I boot up, I get the message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file." If it is possible, I would like to try to do a system restore, but im not sure if that is really an option right now. If it isn't it isn't that huge of a deal, as there was nothing that was extremely impotant on there anyway. I have linux installed on my computer so I can go into windows and view the files that are still there, however I cannot write to them. Anyway, I don't have an xp disk (although I'm sure I could get one from a friend), but I do have the recovery disks that came with my computer, so If needed I can use those. Anyway, thanks a lot for the help!
