I recently tried to install scanner software and got the CD in crooked. I had to apply a little force to get the ROM to eject. Right after that I got an error message which appears on reboot.

Another option is to "Ignore" which I select and the computer seems to function properly. I can install the software but it will not recognize the scanner. In the software installation process it does a test of the link to the scanner and it fails. However, the Windows XP Home resident scanner software does recognize the scanner and lets me use it. I would prefer to use the UMAX software as it is easier to use with OE for e-mailing scanned images.

I am assuming this is a hardware related problem since the error message appeared at the time I had the CD problem.

Sounds like a corrupt install has caused the problem.
Uninstall the Umax software completely and then check and remove the scanner from within the device manager. R click My Comp. Properties etc. Reboot and let windows detect the scanner again. Check their web site for any newer software than what you have on the disk. Or if only a small update you may need to install the CD software and then run the update download.

Carefull when you put a CD in the tray. Both the Drive and Disc can be damaged. Make sure the disc is not scratched, or contains fingerprints, as this can cause install errors.

I uninstalled the Umax software and removed the scanner from the device driver listing. Rebooted and still got the same error message. Doesn't seem to matter if I select "Close" or "Ignore ", the error message goes away and the computer seems to operate normally. The UMAX site doesn't have any downloads available for this scanner - only CDs that they sell. They also have little in the way of website help in researching problems like this. Rather than spend any more on this scanner, which I may replace soon anyway, I will just use the XP interface with the scanner.

However, that still leaves the error message that pops up on reboot. Would using the System Restore feature going back prior to this mishap take care of this? If so, I would have to do a little homework on how to use it as this Dell is only about two weeks old and I am new to XP Home. Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

System restores worth a try. Start Help and support will get you to it. You will have to reinstall any updates and installs made after the restore point though. But email, favorites and other data changes will remain.

It's fixed. I did disconnect the CD-ROM and reboot but the error message came back. I then tried the System Restore which appears to have done the trick. Luckily I hadn't done any installs or updates since the restore point I selected so it appears that I lost nothing. Everything appears to be normal now - no message on reboot. So, thanks for your input Paul and Chuck.
