First of all, I am using a Linksys Wireless-G Router, model WRT54G; a Compaq Presario 2500 Series Laptop running Windows XP Home SP2; and finally, a Sony Vaio 540 desktop, model VGC-RA820G running Windows XP Media Edition SP2. Laptop has a wireless connection, Desktop a wired connection

    The problem:
I am trying to make the computers be able to share files over the network, since the computers are on the same router, I did not think that they would give me much of a problem, but they are angry with me or something... so I do not know. The laptop can see the desktop in search - find computers, but the desktop cannot. But, you would think that if you could see it you can connect to it, right? Wrong, when I try to connect it gives a message saying that access is denied... *sigh*

    Any response is greatly appreciated,
    Jason

edit note: Just now saw the other response. Good idea and easier if the dang wizard works right (usually) but you do need to check on the firewall situation.

If either or both PCs have a running firewall you'll have to open a hole for the other PC else no connection will be possible.

Client for Microsoft Networks and File & Printer Sharing both need to be loaded.

Something needs to be shared on each PC if you want them to play nice via My Network Places.

If you are letting the router's DHCP assign IP addresses or if you have them set static, make sure both are in the same logical network. If you aren't sure, post the IP and subnet mask of each.

Works best if both PCs are logging on with a username and non-blank password. Worth the tiny bit of extra effort IMO. Use the exact same username/password on both if you want - unless there are security concerns.

I have only used the wizzard a couple of times but when I did it told me it was going to modify the firewall settings.

Did you create a disk on the fist machine and then run the install on the second?
