    Hi
I have a Win98SE PC here, it was playing up starting up and shutting down and was totally infected with spyware.
I installed and ran ad-awareSE and Spybot which cleared up a lot of problems, but certain issues remained.
I thought I would re-install 98 on top of itself to replace any corrupt files and settings.
After the first reboot while installing, it said there was a problem with the registry and to run "scanreg /fix" which I did and the installation seemed to complete fine but once I had rebooted I now find that Office will not work, nor will Zone Alarm or McAfee Antivirus - they say they need to be reinstalled and when I go to add/remove programs in control panel - only two items are listed
    - Help! How do i get this back to it's previous state? - if that is possible
    Many thanks

    First question or two.

How did you boot the machine to do the re-install ?

Did you boot from HardDrive or the Floppy ?

If you booted form the HD did you MAKE SURE that Windows went back into the EXISTING folder ?

If you did/did not do this then I can see why the programs need re-installing. Windows MAY BE in a Different folder. Usually it is C:\Windows001.

Booting Driectly to the Floppy from a power off state will ( or at least usually does ) prevent this.

    Hi BillyBob

I booted directly from my 98SE CD
and told windows to install to C:\Windows - which it has.
There is no Windows001 file on the disk.
Although I have not used Win98 for a couple of years on my personal machine, I do remember reinstalling it over the top of itself many times when I did use it to correct errors - and never had this result before!

    Thanks for answering my question.

I have never booted from the CD to install/reinstall any version of Windows.

In fact I have not used the CD other than to copy the Contents of the Win98 Folder from the CD to the HD.

Then I booted from the Floppy and ran setup from the files on the HD.

Gotta go for now. I am already late for an appointent. Be back later.

Hi Spotta, You seem to be at the stage where you may ask yourself
"is it easier to Format and re-install Win98 SE ? "
Save as many of your personal files as you can ....
    regards
