word hangs when saving

Writer friend is having a problem with Microsoft Word. It, every so often, hangs when she trys to save. It seems to happen if she's written a lot without savings. The only solution seems to be to exit and lose the work she's done. We have cleaned up the disk and are in the process of defraging the drive. Any one hear of this and have any idea what is causing it?
She is using Win98 and Office 2000(I think ... it might be the version before 2000).

Wiry, If it is Word 2000 (version 9.0) what has she got in Options/Save tab ?

Thanks, Merlin ... she had "save in background" box checked. I think she has a memory problem ... doesn't regularly empty temporary internet files, etc.
Anyway, I had her uncheck the box as the "word" help menu said it wasn't a good idea to check the box if the memory was low. We'll see if this works.

You could suggest she get into the habit of pressing Control s periodically while she's working. I have Office 2000, and it auto saves every 10 minutes, but, since I hate typing, control s is habit after each "profound" thought. LOL
