    Hi all

I'm running NIS (Norton Internet Security 2003) with the firewall turned on. I noticed that it monitors certain common used HTTP ports such as 80, 8080 and 8088 etc.

Recently, I was doing some development work on my local machine. When I attempt to test my work (using http://localhost:8080), it says that port 8080 is in use. Feeling that it might have been the firewall causing the error message, I disabled it and it works fine.

Right now, I have removed port 8080 from the HTTP port list so that things will work fine when I attempt to connect to port 8080 everytime. May I know if it is safe to do so?

    Pls advice.

    Made some discovery sometime back.

It is OK to disable port 8080 as mentioned in my post. However, if you are using the builtin ads-blocking feature that is integrated with NIS, you will find that it does not block the ads if you disable port 8080. I suspect that it is because I am using a proxy to surf the internet (as required by my ISP) and therefore, all internet traffic will pass through port 8080.

However, if your port 8080 is not in use and you remove it from NIS option, I guess it shouldn't be much of a problem (IE: the ads blocking should still work).

Hope this will answer the queries should anyone encounter/need some advice on this issue ;)
